Sorry it's another pre cats outs question
Discussion
Your kind advise needed please..
I have just spent the last 2hr reading all the previous threads and have to say I'm still none the wiser.
My car is booked in Wednesday 26th March for a service and sort what seems to be Manifold issues (Ticking and slight knock noise).
Before this happened I was looking at having the box sleeved for more noise I don't want to go full decat or the Clive,ACT option.
Now that it looks like I will be having Manifolds removed would I benefit anything by having just the pre cats removed? Some of the posts I looked at date back to 2007 so was looking for a more up to date opinion.
Will I gain any noise difference with just pre cats out,I am reading that temp running could benefit or am I better to leave alone and stick to plan 'A' and ask them to sleeve.

Personally I think it's a waste of time just doing the pre cats in isolation. Removing the pre cats just removes the restrictions that benefits doing the full decat job.
You might find they have already disintegrated when i removed my pre cats, one side had practically disappeared.
Removing pre cats will still pass MOT.
The more throaty / burble comes from removing the main cat and or sleaving of exhaust. Mine is full decat with Clive Y piece and standard sports exhaust.

Assuming you have all standard exhaust, then damn straight; get them out of there.
The difference in temperature is worth it, never mind anything else.
The difference in noise should be minimal.
The next options are;
1 main cat out and leave standard silencers in OR
2 main cat stays and sleeve your silencers
3 leave the rest as it is
I've stayed with option 2 because I hate arse ache at MOT time and the standard Y piece de-catted sounds (to me) horrific.
Mine arrived new with sleeved exhaust, removal of the pre-cats came much later.
I can say, that at the time I got it, it was the loudest TVR I had heard in 6 months of visiting dealers, it turned heads every time I started it up, but it wasn't so loud as to be deafening or head ache inducing.

We seem to be in the same way of thinking..The difference in temperature is worth it, never mind anything else.

Replacing for mot time i just don't want the hassle of and I have listened to many with the new 'Y' pieces and that's not what I'm after (sorry Paul, love your light conversion but Y piece is a no no for me)
Goaty Bill... Not sure if you know the answer to this but.... TVR power are having mine to do the work,so to take out pre cats and sleeve, how many hours would be involved?
I have gone through so many tube video's trying to locate the sound I want and this is the result (PH sticker on the rear so hope you don't mind me posting) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Apj-SSA3h0
Mine revved better with the pre cats out .. I would go for ether
Pre cats out Standard Y piece in with cat and any sports exhaust which floats your boat ,personally I hate the cut and shut sleeved exhaust . Something like the ACT sports exhaust or get an exhaust fabricator to change it with two hand made cherry bombs(loose the silencer) which consists of perforated pipe wadding and rolled stainless steal ,it cost me £150 to have it done . It was an ACT copy and sounded very raspy ,loved it .
The reason I had to get rid is when the ACT de catt Y piece was fitted it sounded awful
Option two which I have is a standard exhaust ,ACT or Clives Y piece and pre cats out .
Option one to me sounds a bit more raspy so out the two the first option is the one I prefer .
My ACT copy

The real thing ,very similar ACT

Once the manifolds are off, it is a simple task for a qualified welder to cut, bash and shut the manifolds.
They should either cut and fit a new section of collector pipe, or cut and re-weld the existing collectors.
If any of your exhaust leaks turn out to be in the collector section, then this allows them the best opportunity of repairing that as well as they can access it from the inside.
Being the responsible people that they are, I am betting they would look at strengthening the 4 into 1 joints anyway while it was apart.
It's probably not more than an hour once the manifolds are on the bench.

Thx Daren for posting..
As my car is having a 12k service and a few other bits doing I don't want the bill to be getting out of control.
That video I posted is exactly the sound I'm after and was in contact with him just a few days before my manifold problem when I met you at Langar.
I was only thinking that now having the Manifold looked at having the pre cats out alone might gain extra noise close to that video, but this seems not to be the case. The opinion with pre cats out only seems to be very slight difference in noise but YOU think revs better and Goaty and others thinks it's best for temp gains.
I personally, and this is all about personal taste in sound difference is I don't want to go full decat or Y pieces and I don't like the sound of the cherry bombs
Fussy lot of B
s are't we
But I know what I want and that's the noise coming from that video clip and if that's sleeved that's the procedure for me.
From your advise and Goaty's I will have pre cats removed while they are doing the manifold problem and go for the sleeved.. I believe it's just half sleeved where they replace solid pipe with honey-coned as complete sleeved is again a bit too much for my ears.
Thanks again for the advise

I have not used Power before but from what I read my car will be in very good hands and feel pretty confident they can do what's needed..
