Gas Turbine noise

Turbines are pretty noisy beasts, and I'm toying with the idea of running one in my laboratory for an undergraduate module. An R-R Artouste to be precise.

It would sit in a basement room with lots of ventilation for air coming in, though we'd probably need some means of venting the exhaust gas out through a flue up to the roof or somewhere. Exhaust temperature would be about 550 degs C.

Most of the noise will be in the gas path I'd guess, and I know you can get silencers for commercial turbines, but I'd need to do this for minimal costs.

Has anyone any expertise in noise control of gas turbines ?
Could we fabricate one ourselves ?

Anyone know much about this engine in particular ?

The only gas turbines I have seen close up were installed in big insulated cabins (with inlet & exhausts obviously), so I would guess that to keep it quiet enough to use in a building you would need something similar. The cabins looked and felt expensive, as in thick heavy walls, close fitting doors etc.

Have a chat with Brunel university mechanical eng dept - they run (or ran) a BRM turbine for undergrad labs.

A De-tuner would be of some use here I would imagine.

What size is your engine? The rb199s I worked on were bloody loud even in the detuners.

Save up loads of egg boxes and stick em on the wall wink

All the ones I have heard on test beds were really noisy, I think RR had a spey in a building and was noisy but not rb211 noisy.

Egg boxes smile lots of foam sheeting etc?

It's going to be a noisy beast as in effect it's a first generation helicopter turbine. With the vast majority of the noise coming from the exhaust that's going to be tricky to control without melting stuff.

It was used as the APU in the VC10. Very very noisy. I guess you'd need a diffuser of sorts to try and reduce its exhaust noise.

Be interesting to see one running again, you never forget the noise they make!

Coventry University have one as well ex BL turbine from the experimental turbine powered cars era.

My last company used to rebuild and test VC-10 APU's and yes they were eceptionally noisy even in a test cell. For propulsion work we teach our undergraduates with a small Wren jet. The theories are still valid, but the space required is a lot less, in fact we just wheel the test rig outside into our rear car park and run it there. We have derated it to 100k rpm, but it's still nice and loud.

I know you asked about noise, but you really really need to think about how you're getting the air in and out. Fumes in a basement- make sure you don't kill yourself...

What sort of dB are you trying to get down to? It's a law of diminishing returns, I worked on a large turboshaft where getting to 95 dB was easy (ish!) but 85 was a nightmare.

This basement room has a large door opening onto the outside.
The original use of the room was for a back up generator, so it has a floating concrete plinth and large slatted vent above the door to the outside.
air in will not be a problem, venting gas (550C as it leaves the engine) and the noise in the gas path is more tricky. I suspect I will need to vent it up a long flue to the top of the building.
I also suspect I need a silencer somewhere close behind the engine.
