I read online that there was a long range tank option on a W124, could it be fitted to a coupe?

The coupe did have the option of the 90 litre tank, too.

Whether Saloon and Coupe tanks would be interchangeable, I don't know.
I not sure if it would be affected but I would also check the fuel pump, lines, tank fixing points and perhaps boot carpets, etc weren't also different. Probably wouldn't be, but worth checking first smile

Fuel gauge is different, too.

It was available on coupés and saloons. It was a £73.56 option in 1991. I suspect a saloon tank could be fitted to a coupé but there'd be a lot of work.

Thank you Mercedes experts of PH!

The long range tank is the sort of thing that floats my boat, a 20 gallon tank in a E220 coupe on a run down to the South of France would get me most of the way there!

Agreed! Lack of range is a major pain in many cars. Ferrari 550 has 114litres (25gallons); the Bristol Fighter has 130litres (28gallons); both proper long distance cars.

I don't remember being too strapped in my W124 though. I do remember doing Estepona to Biarritz in a day on one refill in 1998.

I did that journey in 8 hours in the SL once. I think I had draw fuel twice, though. I got lifted once, as well.

Last time I did that journey was in my Alfa 33! Plenty of snap crackle and pop but not a great deal of speed.....

How long a range do you need? My E320 does 400 miles on a tankful at 70-80mph.

I never got more than 300miles out of the 72litre tank in my 320TE.

I think 500miles is about right for range. Then your refuelling can coincide with mealtimes, with plenty in reserve. My SL will do 400miles between fills on a continental trip.

The XKSS holds 20 gallons or thereabouts, but that doesn't go far. On the other hand the C class diesel (2012) will easily do 500 on a tankful. I am sure many modern cars can easily cope with that. Didn't Clarkson do Switzerland to Blackpool on one tank in an XJ6 a few years back?

Yes, he did, Baden Baden to Blackpool in a XJ TDV6.

Sad as this may be...but in my defence it's part of my job! The long range tank was an option on the CE, my 300CE had it fitted. Filling it used to hurt! Someone elses problem now as I've 'loaned' it to a friend of mine. Anyway, code 915 was the 90l tank. There will be differences to the boot interior trims but little else I think.

Just speccing an ML at the moment and I see that a larger fuel tank is still an option one can choose.
