2004 mk Golf - Timing chain replacement cost

What model do you have is it a 1.6 fsi? ( most mk5's have a timing belt but some of them do have chains).
What are the current symptoms?
I've only changed one timing chain on mk5 it was a 1.6 Fsi a few years ago from memory the chain kit was about £130 but the the tensioner is made up of a couple of hydraulic parts and if you buy all of it it's another £200+ then labour to do it is a big job say £250 to 350 at an engineering shop - it can be done with engine in the car.
If your current engine is rattling badly you'd be better off getting a 2nd hand engine from a reputable breaker like Steve at VWS in Essex with a 60 day warranty - it's as easy to do an engine swap as replace the timing chain and might work out cheaper and have better result.

As for the Symptons. I was driving down the M6 at about 75-80 and hear a big clunk and next minute engine light starts flashing. got it over to the hard shoulder where it pretty much died !!
