Reading Kevin/Lemonentry's post gave me an idea.... you know how wedge tubs keep cropping up (after being wedge-raped?)

Well why not buy up all the tubs and keep them in a large garage at head height, on a rail system?

Then you can have one chassis and (depending on the day of the week) lower the tub of choice onto it (kind of like Thunderbird 4...) and go for a drive!

With a bit of work the two looms could be made pluggable into the body and the mounting bolts made into some sort of quick-release style for easy interchange. Quick-release brake and clutch unions... what else, hmm the cooling system, this will need thinking about. And the steering. Well let's assume all this can be solved...

This way you only have one car to tax (all bodies being registered to the same chassis) and maintenance becomes a breeze - no more jacking up! Easy access to the rear brakes!

Better still walk into the garage and have these robotic arms assemble the car around you. biggrin

I think Kevin did a really nice job on his car, I like the Healey shape a lot, but going the opposite way and putting a wedge body onto a improved chassis would be even better.

Don't bother with the body bolts, just fly up the drive brake hard and slide off!

Even crazier idea: why don't we find someone to volunteer their car for some chassis repairs and do a practical demo of replacing the sill rails at the 'Fest? biggrin

scratchchin...Mmmm....Im planning on removing the sills on mine and then replacing the rivets with riv-nuts so the sill can be removed from time to time for inspection..Im anticipating an aero chocolate bar once i remove them..Hopefully not but i would volunteer mine if needed...biggrin

Assuming the metalwork is sound, clean up and degrease, repaint with Smoothrite and then underseal over it. I guarantee it'll be ten years before you need to look at them again. Well OK, five biggrin

It's not that crazy

I believe Adrian@ over in the classic section was going to do this with a Taimar and a 3000S

A plug and play approach

Wouldn't be beyond sone good engineering skills to figure out

Drill out the rivets then you can use self tappers in the holes left by the rivets. Done it on my 350 and I recon I could have a sill off in about 30 secs smile simples !!

Hi Ron...Im always dubious about fixing straight into fibreglass as it has a tendency to splinter and crack..I will prefer to use the riv-nuts..Cheers...Ziga

How about painting one of these Wedge tubs white and covering it all over with rhinestones in the pattern of the Elvis Aloha Jumpsuit with the shape of an eagle on the bonnet, then putting it up for auction at the BBWF. I don't think that's ever been done and would be totally unique.

I drilled two holes in my sills with slots leading from the holes, I've used massive self tappers into the underside of the body where there were rivets, I then offer the front half of sill up so screw head drops through hole then shove sill forward via the slot then same idea at the back but the slot goes sideways instead, simples and it holds my weight as I roll out the seat onto the floor elegantly!

Why not trim the tub slightly, leaving just a nose cone? Daily checks of the outriggers possible, which must be a good thing

Hmmm, Rivnuts have to be 'set' using a tool similar to a pop-riveter, so the cylindrical part compresses to grip the panel - you'd have much the same chance of the GRP splitting as you install them as with any other method.

It's possible ti install Rivnuts using a spare bolt, a couple of washers, nut and a pair of spanners but once you get past M8 or try to install the steel, rather than alloy ones, it gets a bit hard on the hands.
