Speccing a car - conflicting options

Just browsing the VW Golf brochure.

Notice you can upgrade your 18" standard Nogaro wheels to 19" Santiago but this is not available in conjunction with optional panoramic sunroof.

Quite a few conflicts like that but I really can't imagine how on earth does a wheel upgrade affect the sunroof?

VW are quite odd with this sort of thing.
When we bought our van, having 4Motion meant you couldn't spec front parking sensors or a fifth seat; eh?!

Hypothetically it could be down to the transmission of shocks and loadings through the body with the larger wheels. The old vRS Octavia estate was only fitted with 16" wheels and not the 17" of the saloon as they didn't feel the body shell was stiff enough (they fitted reinforcing bars to the vRS) for them. IIRC your warranty was voided by fitting 17" wheels to the estate...

As well as the stiffness, it wouldn't surprise me to find that there were centre-of-gravity issues around the extra weight of the sunroof up high, and the different weight/height of the 19" wheel/tyre combo caused the ESP to have a brain-fart.

Off topic a little but when I was looking at estates which can tow a 1420kg caravan the vRS had a lower towing limit (too low unfortunately) than the 'normal' estates even though it had 170bhp compared to 140bhp.

Could also be CO2 related.

I know of another vehicle where a sunroof was standard on a certain grade, unless you specified an estate - The additional weight took the car into the next CO2 banding

I know glass is heavy but surely not that heavy.

I imagine 5 people and boot full of camping gear would be considerably more.

Yeah but a manufacturer can't sell you a car complete with 5 people and boot full of camping gear!

That glass has to be structural, remember, since it's replacing substantial areas of stressed body structure in the event of an impact.

WTF are they all doing on the roof?

A quick google finds figures of up to 100kg being quoted for panoramic roofs. Roofrack loads are often restricted to 50kg in the handbook, if anybody ever bothers to look...

It'll be to do with weight. They restrict options for GVM.

There is also another design rule that you can't use more than a certain proportion (88% if I remember correctly) of the tyres maximum load in normal use. The 19" will probably has less load carrying capacity.
