Emissions for MOT

Just a quick question about exhaust emissions & MOT's.

Is there a difference in emissions regs. for a 1996 JDM (import)car compared to a 1996 UK car ?

I know there is a big difference in exhaust noise between a UK car & an import (UK 82dB where as an import with an IVA is 99dB) Is it a similar thing with emissions ?
