Lidl, anyone do their "weekly" shop there?

I have a lidl that is slightly closer to me than the big Tesco, so just needed a couple of bits for dinner tonight rather than a full shop, and as I only needed 4 things thought I would save time by popping into Lidl instead.

I needed:

Lamb mince

Chilli sauce

Lettuce

Tomato

This place sells kangaroo steak, moose leg, belt sanders, 34 different types of salami and a kitchen sink

But no lamb mince, or any form of chilli sauce (apart from sweet chilli)

What.....the.....fudge?

Do people just shop here to stock up on hiking boots and smoked cheese? As I can't see how you could possibly do a normal shop here if they don't sell the simplest of things.

I don't think you can, hence my missus refuses to go there - she's far too busy.

I went to get some of their renowned windscreen washer fluid and noticed that a couple of people in the checkout queue were buying single items and the most was 3 or 4.

Their Olives are epically cheap & their 3 year old Jamaican rum @ £12.00 is pretty good


They occasionally have Weston's Old Rosie @ £1.29 a bottle .



We get through loads of salad here & it's a lot cheaper than Sainsbury's , we tend to do half & half

Our local has a great in house bakery which I sometimes call in (for pain au raisin)....otherwise it's usually for some gadget in there special offers :-)

Lamb mince is one of those things which can be annoyingly difficult to get. Even Waitrose doesn't always have it.

I have a 'Hackfleisch', so can mince my own at a push. Lidl lamb shoulder chops work perfectly well in that.

Anything spicy or overly exotic, forget about finding that at Lidl. Chillies are hopeless and ginger non-existent. The Germans also have some rather strange ideas about curry (it will have pineapple chunks in).

But for standard European fare and cleaning stuff, Lidl is excellent. I'd say I can get 75% of my shop there.

Always, usually spending less than £30 a week on food for two. You have to see what they have rather than go with set list of items.

I shop there often. For two, the week can be done for around £30 as above. Can't beat it for value and most of the produce is very, very good. I've been surprised how good, to be honest.

Some of the stuff they sell is good and cheap. For eg I think the meat is better than the bigger chains. The name brand stuff they have is normally a lot cheaper than other places.

Other things I've tried are utter muck.

You can't get everything you want either. For this reason I only pop in these days to see what tools etc they have on offer. The stuff I've had from there has been very good so far.

Yes, main weekly shop is done at Lidl. Converted to them 4+ years ago (mainly used Sainsbury's before that). More than happy with quality and pricing and the 'specials' are a bonus, this weekend we came home with kangaroo, veal liver and wild boar, but it could just as easily have been a generator or a waffle maker

Still use local shops and other supermarkets for specific items that Lidl don't carry or which are better elsewhere.

Don’t get me wrong, I like the place, as people have said some of the things there are very good and cheap.

I also understand that you *could* do a weekly shop there if you didn’t have a list, just grab whatever you see and cobble together a meal.

I just don’t work like that, I work out what I want for dinner in the car on the way home and then go grab the stuff I need for that exact meal, for that reason I will never be able to shop in Lidl regularly.
