yet another what car thread?!

Looking for a sub £2000 car for commuting to and from work when the Mrs goes back to work from maternity leave and we need a second car. My drive consists mostly of twisty, bumpy B roads so good handling out of the box is a must, not too fussed on fuel economy and I'm fairly handy with spanners. No two seaters as I will occasionally have to get car seats in it. So far my not so short list is:
Saxo vtr/vts
306 xsi/gti6
106 gti
E36
Golf Gti 1.8t
Golf v6 4motion (doesn't really tick the handling box but the noise....)
A3 1.8t
Early ibiza cupra
Mk3 golf Gti

Any other suggestions/ones to avoid? Got a couple of months to think about it but got the cash waiting if the right car pops up in the meantime

I was looking at Saabs but they seem more of a cruiser?

Seeing as you've considered small hatches how about a clio 172 or 182?

306 is a great choice, also don't discount a Xsara VTS; basically the same car.

Big enough to be decent on motorways/A-roads, and a surprisingly big boot, I'd discount a Clio/Saxo/106 for these reasons.

Celica, in 190 flavour if you can get one in budget that hasn't been barried.

Really don't like the look of the xsaras, gti6 would be my pick of the bunch.

Hadn't thought of celicas, my brother has the corrolla tsport and it's pretty gutless until the cam kicks over so pretty useless on tight twisty roads unless you keep it well up in the rev range constantly.

Its a shame all of the quirky little jap hatches have rusted away or been wrecked, would love a charade gtti, Mazda 323 gtr or another starlet gt
