Classifieds, E91 BMWs?
Discussion
I can't seem to find any, and the only ones it's showing are not E91 but 'wanted' and coupes etc.
Yet doing some wholesale BMW searches I can spot the odd E91 in there but obviously mis-categorised.
There are loads on Autotrader.
Autotrader tried it once but didn't continue with it once, but using the car selector drop-downs like insurance websites offer is a really nice way to choose cars.
Obviously the current fancy system is all lovely but while even a single advert can be put in the wrong category the whole system then falls apart. What if that one car is the one you want but you don't see?
As much as the system has advanced it still doesn't get around the need for buyers to go through EVERY car just in case the one they want is in the wrong place... so all that advancement appears to have been for nothing?
Unless I'm doing something wrong?

It seems all of the E91s are in the E90 category. If you select body type as estate then you should see them.

I agree it's not ideal. I personally don't like having BMW, Porsche, etc. split up to that degree but others do seem to like it.
I've looked at a few of the E91s in the E90 category and, without changing a fair bit of code, there is nothing we could use to resolve their category into E91. DVLA has them registered as E9X, which gets defaulted to E90.
I suppose it would be worth asking the question of whether we should condense E90 and E91 into a generic E90 category. That's where E92 and E93 go, anyway.
Thoughts?

It's a tough one to fix it seems.
This is one thing that always frustrated me on the Autotrader site, that every optional drop-down list may have 'unlisted' so you have to always check the unlisted cars for every option you choose just to make sure a particular car isn't hidden there.
We have the same issue here with people listing their cars in the wrong place making the filtering a bit useless.
I like the per-model version splitting, it's horrible having to sift through old estate 3.0i's to find an E9x model 330i!
I suppose the solution is to remove the E90/1/2/3 whatever designations and just split them by coupe, saloon, estate. I assume sellers then have to choose one, and there is no default?
In the end I appreciate that a user who is selling their car badly and with wrong details will get a lower footfall to their advert, but it also makes a buyers job harder too simply because the filtering is unreliable. If it's there at all I'd say it was ideal that it was as close to 100% correct. Anything under 95% and it's not worth having as the car you are looking for might be hidden in that 5%!

Gah, I give up.
Someone has a fwd E9x.
Another has a full-time awd.
Lots of 335i owners are thinking they have an NA petrol engine
If all this stuff is based on database referencing then half of these filters shouldn't even have a user option?
Easily 15%+ of the cars in this category will be removed from my search if I just input the correct things to wittle down the car I want (330i Touring manual)... and there are a good 50% spilling into the wrong categories too (mainly 335i)

Yeah, this is the way we're going. E90, E91, E92, and E93 will all go to E90. You can sort from there whether you want coupe, saloon, estate, etc. That sounds like the best approach.
Personally I get confused with the designations and had to look them up to even know which one to choose from your menu
So as for the rest of the options, could you add a database for referencing so things that are known to not be options can be blanked out? Ie, we know all E9x BMW's in the UK are rwd only, so having fwd and awd options seems not ideal given people choose them.
The same for the engine aspiration. Having it an option for people to choose incorrectly seems to make the selection pointless. If you choose NA and get 50% FI engines then it's a pointless filter to have.
Again I'm unsure why all these data fields can't be gleaned from the same database insurance car selectors use...?!

Well if the database is sending junk data then I guess there is only one thing we can expect out of it
In the end I still trawl. Even on eBay it's always the people who advertise badly who struggle to sell and let keen searchers get a deal.
It's just a bit sad that you've revamped the system so heavily to make it better but all the pit falls of categories and filters are still here

This last iteration was mostly cosmetic and most of the performance increases were on the client end when rendering the site.
But you're right. We all know a BMW 3 series is never FWD and a Porsche 911 is always rear-engined so we should have a layer that intercepts the user's input and forces those values.
If only I had some free time...
