His lordship's sprung a little leak and his stoppers need desqueakifying so it's off to the quack's for a quick healthcheck.

Except it's never quite that simple.

Somebody is very kindly donating a significantly more Kremeresque intercooler, so that's an unexpected addition straight off and since it's in, I was persuaded (ok, ok - mindlessly self-convinced) to strip out the rear seats, sound proofing & carpet [to be retrimmed in finest earthworm ermine] and say arrivederchi to the rear windscreen wiper & motor.

In the region of 50 kilos shorn, I believe and without precipitating an entirely desolate wallet.

This means that without doing anything totally insane, the 1502 kilo 'out the traps' weight will be nestling down to around a (still too portly) 1432.

I still reckon the wing mirrors need RUFifficating but I can't find anything to aid the flow of air over the mid-14th century windscreen wipers.

In summary, getting there...

Failing that, I'm sure Kev from BlingingSaxos.com should be able to sort you out with a rally-style-innit single wiper conversion...

DeR,

Have you had a look into light weight doors, the kind that were an option on 993 RSs?

Also, I know you like the stock look, but why not get some ultra light weight BBS cross-spoke wheels? I know Manthey do some that weigh just 7 kg each, whereas for exaple GT3 wheels weigh 11 kg. That would be saving of 16 kg total.

Daz,

The Essen Motor Show starts tommorrow. There will be something very shiny and new on the Ruf stand that looks like a 997, only it has turbos, a Ruf chassis number and lots of bhp...........

I might start testing the waters on interest in my unique car soon.........

On second thoughts, having landed back on planet earth you really need to look at how much extra you are going to have to pay against how much extra usable performance you are going to get. Also will Ruf bring a better version out once the engine from the 997TT becomes available.

Didn't you have some kind of Banzai Nuclear Skyline in a former life? Something slightly beyond the within, power levels circa 1000 bhp (Or was that Henry?)

Guy, I'd consider it immediately if I hadn't already blown so much on the beetle: probably fair to say it's now a labour of love.

P.S. Your car is the ultimate, you'd need tablets if you are/were serious about dumping it...would you like one?

Thanks, Sir J, every little helps, as they say.

T9 have advised me in favour of the BBS option if ever I did change (I'd always keep the originals, like I do with most of the original stuff) which is a bit of a shame because the split rim CarGraphic jobbies which you see on many of the conversions look so bloody good, if, dare I say it, a little bling?

Ditching the doors, though? Weeel, yes, it would shed quite a bit but it's such a part of the 993 experience, that famous clang of solidity: how much would two carbon doors save, just out of interest?

Btw, Guy - any data on the Nm torque for your car?

Daz,

Thats also my thought, since it's likely to be over £150k, I will go and look anyway though. I have a 997TT on order, so I could always get that and then get a Ruf upgrade later (though the 997TT may be intolerably heavy).

DeR,

Yes I had a 700bhp GTR, Henry had a 650bhp one and Henry and I co-owned a 1000bhp drag-one (that we never actually drove).

I too have thought about carbon doors, carbon arches, plastic windows, a complete carbon rear-end, magnesium wheels, titanium 8pot 380mm Brembos, etc etc, but have managed to hold back so far. I did get an upgrade quote for the Nardo spec engine though from Ruf.......

Guy

PS My engine is 780nM minimum..........

DeR,

April 2002's GT Purely Porsche reviews a British silver 993 RSR which has what it describes as "optional carbon/alloy" doors. They say it saves 50 kg.

But come on DeR......a quest for saving weight and also a desire for solidly thunking doors.....you can't have your cake AND eat it can you? (Unless you buy a McLaren F1!!)

If you own a Mc F1, whilst driving hard on track & dispatching the beetles, you can have nubile young vixens sat either side of you both feeding you cake

Birds & Battenburg at Brands- the cake is truely both posessed & consumed
