Ultimate Mitsubishi Evo X details

40 cars, 40 years, 440bhp... £50K. Oh.

So here it is then, the 40th anniversary Mitsubishi Evo X. And, as we perhaps all expected, there are plenty of very large numbers associated with it (and small ones where servicing is concerned, but we'll come to that).

FQ-440 for those who found 400 a bit torpid
FQ-440 for those who found 400 a bit torpid
Appropriately enough, the 40th anniversary special totes 440bhp (446hp or 328kw) produced at 6,800rpm. There's also 412lb ft of torque at 3,100rpm. A host of trick components feature to get that much from a 2.0-litre turbo, including 'motorsport specification' high-flow injectors, a new HKS turbo, an intake, intercooler and exhaust from Janspeed plus tweaks to the ECU.

Mitsubishi has also confirmed the FQ-440 will use the six-speed SST dual-clutch gearbox unavailable on the 400. Mitsubishi hasn't disclosed any tweaks made to handle the increased power and torque.

Other upgrades include Alcon brakes all round with six-piston calipers up front, forged 18-inch BBS wheels and Eibach springs that lower the Evo by 35mm at the front and 30mm at the rear. Don't forget the 'PIAA motorsport silicone windscreen wiper blades' too. Seriously.

Will we see a 40-run special out here?
Will we see a 40-run special out here?
Inside the FQ-440 comes with all the equipment any Evo requires. Recaro leather seats, a Rockford Fosgate stereo with eight speakers and a sub (natch), a plethora of airbags and a sat nav. There aren't any pics of the interior but expect it be largely similar to all other Evo Xs.

There is something new though, and rather disconcerting; a data recorder connected via the onboard diagnostic system. It records driving style, performance and location, then will be available to the owner as well as Mitsubishi UK. Moreover, the fitment and recording of data from the device is mandatory for the warranty. Blimey. You think Mitsubishi expects these Evos to be driven hard?

White is the only colour available for the FQ-440 and each of the 40 coming here will cost a nice round £50,000. Don't forget to budget for servicing too, with a 1,000-mile oil change required and then another service every six months or 4,500 miles. Some things never change...

And if £50K seems a little excessive for an Evo, fast and rare though it undoubtedly will be, don't forget to check the classifieds. There aren't any 400s on PH right now, but this manual 360 has a few choice upgrades and this 2010 SST 330 dips in under £20K. Will Mitsubishi find enough aficionados to stump up for the 40th anniversary cars? Time will tell.

Well thats a surprise, the SST box. Shows what we all know.

The warranty thing is quite scary, 'oh sir you accelerate too hard, too many times a month, sorry you have to pay for the new gearbox'

Even if I could afford £50k for one of these (I'm only £49,981.50 short) , that transponder thing would put me off. With my tinfoil hat on, I can see high adoption levels of this technology once someone (Mitsubishi, it seems) have piloted it.

"Nothing to hide, nothing to fear," they'll cry. Falsely.

My dealer contacted me about this today. The warranty is 3 years, but only 36000 miles. As for the comment on servicing, all other Evo Xs from the FQ360 down are 10,000 miles.

However, they do have 27 preorder deposits already and all deposits need to be in by next Monday! At that point, if they're oversubscribed, it's raffle time! I declined. I was hoping for maybe a 380-400, therefore not needing the SST box or engine to be opened up and keeping the cost down. Under £40k, I'd have given it serious thought, but £50k? For die hard fans only. There are far nicer cars available for that money.

I'll stick with my FQ330 SST, thanks all the same. Though if anyone wants to offer me £18k+ to take it off me, I'll think about it....

The dealer also said they'd all been discussing it and can't think why anyone would buy one....but people are. It also doesn't have the unique styling that the FQ400 could at least boast.

£50 fking grand!

They still sell these in Japan, how much would it cost to import a 'normal' Evo X? £30k tops?

Rip off Britain strikes again.

Silver 22B wheels are they ?? Must be the special edition wheels smile
£50k... wow thats a lot, but I don't think anyone in reality is too shocked at that are they ?? Puts it on par price wise with some heavy hitting machinery. Still though maybe it will be special enough to be worth it, lets wait and see.

The whole Evo thing just seems so out of date. Sorry. 12-year-old boys will love it, but I don't think many are looking for a new £50k car.

2.0t with HUGE turbo = May as well buy a 1.2 Polo.

Don't get me wrong great news to have an Evo back but we're not all Ari Vatanen and the drive to Tesco's with the Mrs and kids on board isn't usually done at 9/10th's. If you want a weapon buy aforementioned polo and something with hardly any body panels for the weekend for that fee. If you do come across a country lane and get the 9/10th's out of it when the boost comes in you'll find yourself suddenly in the Boot of the dawdling half asleep S-max, Cashcow, Juke, Focus, Kia [insert average family car here] in front that you couldn't see from just careering around that blind bend. Time and a place people this is neither a track car nor a road car this is purely Focus RS Pub talk Competitor, Disappointed.

Another thing to bear in mind is that it's a post registration upgrade. So when you use the usual insurance company sites it'll come up as a basic model and you then have the hassle of explaining about it being different! I get it every year with mine which at least only has an extra 30bhp over the FQ300 SST it's based on.

Shame the original Lancer Register rumours of an FQ400 at around £40k didn't come about. I'd have thought more about that.

The Evo X FQ 360 I had a few years ago was still one of the most fun cars on the planet. I bloody luffed it.
Apart from the service intervals....
These are far too expensive new but give it a couple of years wink
ps mine was manual. But badly needed a 6th gear for the motorway.

Well, with 27 pre-orders already, it seems Mitsi knows how to sell cars better than we do.

Not my thing either (got the Evo's out of my system years ago) but someone will love them. And they'll be weapons, no doubt about that

Rip off? It's only about 10% more in real terms than the 'bargain' 276hp Evo 6 when it was launched in 1999.

All the same, the time for these cars has passed, and I say that as a former owner and advocate. They're simply of a previous time.

You can get a C63, RS4, M3 etc. with about the same power and an easier life (servicing, build quality, dealer support) for about the same OTR, much less on finance I'd assume.

Can't imagine who'd pick an ancient (chassis is 7 years old), rattly (it's been reported that Mitsubishi are studying 1980s Amstrad stereos for inspiration in improving interior build quality and ergonomics), fragile (I've no doubt that the fundamentals are strong enough, but the paranoia that pervades the thinking behind the servicing and monitoring regime speaks volumes) 4-cyl Mitsubishi anachronism over a modern, discrete 6/8-cyl weapon.

Wow! where do I sign up? All gone? Damn.....

Am I the only one thinking there's better ways to spend 50K?

Indeed. It's been hard enough getting warranty claims off Mitsubishi with mine! They'll be using the data recorder to look for excuses to invalidate warranties, not to be reasonable.

Its a bit of an oddity to me. This is not an new EVO but an old car made to go a bit quicker with shorter service intervals and it costs £50k.

To be fair its one of only 40 in the world but other than fans of the breed it will seem like every other evo out there.

I doubt this will be a future classic as the demand for such cars has fallen. Subaru did the CS400 that was £50k I suspect they are not that now nore are the RB320 cars or the Type 25's.

Still kudos to thopes who buy one I hope the driving data sent to Mitsubishi gives them all a smile.
