Buying a car from Ireland?

There's a specific car i'm after, but there are none for sale in this country, and plenty for sale in Ireland.

How complicated would it be to bring the car to the UK? Can i just hop over there, hand over cash, and drive it back via ferry? Would it need registration first?

Any help appreciated. If it's relevant, these cars are about 14-18 years old now.

Thanks for that bobbo, so i wouldn't have to pay anything to HMRC. That would just leave the dvla to deal with, i assume?

I've had a couple. They are great cars, very cheap in Ireland now. The 20v engine is fantastic.

Having said that, that's the process for bringing one up here, but I cant see why it would differ on the mainland.

Meant to add - as long as its insured and road legal you can just pay the cash and head home.

If you do buy from Ireland can you see if there are any leprechauns?

I'm not sure they are real and doubt they exist.

MOT on chassis number, Insure on chassis number, register.

And as the DVA (Northern Ireland) merges with the DVLA (Swansea) this year I imagine it will be exactly the same process.

Be careful with the insurance. I had a nice quote on an EK9, think it was with Admiral, I rang them up and explained it was on Irish plates and they'd need to insure it off the chassis number, they said it was fine. I had the car brought over from Ireland and taken to Cardiff on a low loader. I needed to drive it to Cornwall. I rang up the insurance company to purchase the insurance and they said "sorry sir we don't insure off the chassis number" even though they had confirmed before hand they would. My phone battery was dead after that phone call so I was left with no other options. I wasn't best pleased.

The company I did insure it with only covered it for 2 weeks on the chassis number before they would cancel which isn't that helpful when you need to MOT it and send off the paperwork to the DVLA.
