We're in the (seemingly never ending) process of trying to find a suitable replacement for our Freelander 2, and I quite like the look of the W164 ML.

Does anyone have any experience of the difference between the 280 and 320 diesel. On paper, fuel economy seems fairly similar.

Thanks, M

Fuel economy is similar, 320 gives you a bit more power.

I had a 280 and it did the job ok. It may be worth spending a bit more on the 320, but not too much more.

They are good cars. The main things to watch out for are to check electric tailgate and folding mirrors still work ok and that the alloys and roof bars are not tarnished.

Good luck.

Have owned a 164 for about 6 months now (due to increasing family)

Great workhorse and a comfortable distance cruiser. I found the 280 and 320 underpowered so went for the ML350, which is fine.

Main thing to look out for is the electronic plate on the 7g gearbox, these can go.
They tend to eat through wheel sensors as well, around £200 a pop fitted and coded at an indy.

Interior materials are not as good as older models imho, but that is the same with the new E Class etc. as well.

Tries a bit too hard to handle like a car as well, go for 17 or 18" wheels and not 19 or 20's.

But not a bad bus.
