M1 roadworks - bridges named

Driving south from junction 31 to 28 this morning on the M1, I noticed all the bridges have a sign next to them. It has the name of the road either above or below the motorway followed by two long numbers. They even had separate signs at junctions for the north and south bridges.

I'm guessing it's to satisfy some health and safety regulation or other but why? Seemed a bit pointless to me and I've not noticed them anywhere else.

So, PH, over to you. Why name bridges whilst road works are taking place.

I'd like all motorway bridges to be labelled by numbers or names. That way any emergency phonecall about scrotes lobbing bits of concrete or desperate souls looking for a simple solution can make the location easily identifiable.

The signage is to help locate an individual worksite.

As above it helps let us know where we are. You'll also notice underpasses and culverts named too. All official names from HA asset database. The overhead cables/bridges is obviously there to ensure numpties don't hit them with raised tower lights and jibs etc. - sometimes, especially cables you can't see them at night.

Surely for locating a site then numbers would be better every so often. Bridges are at irregular points so if a site is not that near a bridge then it might not help that much.

Also if numbers were used they could be used again on another motorway.

It seems a lot of effort to go to just to help locate a particular site in a set of roadworks. I do understand not seeing cables in the dark though.
