And the chemical ones are only good for the morning after apparently... use them before a long period and they are useless.

You used to be able to, maybe you still can, buy actual police spec breathalysers on the web.

They are only about £80 or so...

Also I saw one in Curry's (or was it Comet) for, I think, £20.

Bought one a couple of years ago, still use it, can be very scary on the next day you think you should be ok but it shows you are over the limit.
Also on some of the days that you feel like sh!t it says that you are ok to drive.

Answer must be if you drink a lot that night don't drive the next day!

DVD is correct, although they are not accurate but should provide a good indication. But do not rely on it.

The police SL 400 and SL 200 devices are far more than 80 quid and do require calibrating. You may be able to get them from the manufacturer who is Lion.

DVD's advice is spot on. Only ever believe a +ve result.

Only ever once blew into a breath test, it was at a retirement party where most of the attendees were traffic related plus some friends and neighbours. God knows where this kit came from.

Incidentally law about to be changed so that a trip to the station and second test no longer a requirement if a +ve result. All part of keeping plod out of the station and on the streets. Can't have it all ways.
