Hi all, I am looking at using an OEM rear light unit on my car. The unit is E marked which is good but I need to cut away part of the moulding to allow it to fit. Cutting this area has nothing to do with the way the light works at all, it is dead space on the unit around the edge, just black plastic. Question is, can I use it and modify the periphery shape(black plastic) or do I have to use 100% of the unit in order for it to pass the IVA test, no trimming? I can leave the E marking on the unit and back it up with photos for the test. Any help would be most appreciated...

Yes, you can. E-mark isn't a requirement as long as the lights provide a similar brightness, angle of visibility, etc as an E-marked item.

The bazaar twist is that the rear fog light(s) must be E marked.

True and marked F for fog I believe. A few have found at IVA that what they had fitted weren't fog lights despite having an E-mark (remember it has to be the right e-mark for the job) and being sold as a fog light.

Extract from IVA manual
12. All rear fog lamps must display an “e” or “E” mark with a “B” or “F”
