Heading to wales for the first time
Discussion
Help please,
I'm heading to Wales on Saturday and i have to travel a long way west but i want to avoid as much of the M4 as possible. Being entirely new to welsh roads other than the M4 but wanting to explore some of the famous scenery i have let Google maps do most of the hard work, however i thought PH'ers might have some good suggestions.
This is the route Google has offered up. Any suggestions on how to improve it?

Stay off this route IMO, it uses the Heads of the Valley route, once great, last time I was driving it, now covered by average speed cameras in lots of places.Personally I'd head A417 from Cirencester to M5, then get off at Gloucester and take the A40 westwards.

How far and where exactly?
Assuming you're referring to the A40, I've got happy memories of multi-vehicle overtakes on the stretch between Crickhowell and Brecon, but it's always going to be a Trunk Road with all the implications that has for traffic levels and enforcement. The best advice is generally to only use large A-roads to get between the B-roads and minor As that you really ought to be on. There are exceptions, but it's not a bad guide.
Most people in the southern half of England choose Wales because it's easier to get to.
While you're figuring out how to wangle a week off(*), drink your fill of this.

Not long now before I will be heading up there myself.
(*) You'll need at least this much as it's a full day's driving each way to get there and back again.

Couldn't believe my eyes on the first stretch over the brecon beacons and the last stretch on the A4069 was even better!
If you think that was good, try to find the time to visit the Highlands. It will blow your mind. While you're figuring out how to wangle a week off(*), drink your fill of this.

So many good roads in Wales, and much quieter than here in Devon

But they're missing out by taking the easy option.
Not complaining mind as they won't be cluttering up the roads I will be using. Will shortly be doing a similar journey (from the South East instead of the South West) to a destination a bit further north. Will be staying away from the A9 though. Happy to leave that to the sheeples.

I’ve got so much holiday to use up (and a nice new (to me) car) that I’m going to be taking a day off soon, to drive from the Midlands to somewhere in Wales and back again. Probably stop off for a pub lunch somewhere for a bit (sans alcohol!), but basically a bit of driving around for the day on some good Welsh roads. If anyone’s got any routes they can suggest (Midlands > Wales > Midlands), ideally not just turning round in Wales are following the same route back, then I’m all ears and would be most grateful!
I probably won’t set off till after about 8.30, so hopefully miss some of the rush, but happy to be out till late in the evening (I actually like driving in the dark!).
(I’d then need to work out how to plan it into my satnav – I’ve only ever managed to put “A to B” in my satnav, rather than going “via somewhere else”, let alone “multiple somewhere elses”!!).

North Wales isn't really my area, but here's one option.
Other contributors will be able to critique and suggest alternatives. There are other good bits up in the North West corner, but it's already 375 miles - that's a fairly full day, even with the start and end bits on Motorways.
You'd need to sort out the Nav, write out directions or mark up a map - otherwise it's easy to miss a turning.

Looks fantastic. Thank you!

It is quite a way, but what the hell I may as well make the most of the day! I won't be going across to Wales very often, so want to have a good drive around while I'm there. Gassing Station | Roads | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
