I found out today that after October tax discs will cease to exist.

I have always been fond of the tax disc and they have gone into my little boys scrap books.....

I feel like a bit of tradition is dying out....again.

Anyone fancy raising a petition ???? Or is it just me ????

A sad day indeed.

It's just you.

Wish they'd just make the whole thing extinct, yes they're getting rid of the physical disc but they're not making the system any less convoluted. Should just load it on fuel.

Don't really care about not having to display a tax disc, it's a significant advantage on a bike anyway. More concerned about the other rules the sneaky bds have brought in to increase revenue e.g. not being able to sell a car with tax.

They definitely shouldn't load it in fuel!

In agreement, I run 4 cars and two of them are toys.
What I think will improve is the ability to tax online as half the time it won't accept insurance / MOT details.

Plus 1,000 - it's a stupid system that we persevere with for no particular reason.

Drive whatever the hell you want, drive as much as you want, pay tax on the amount of carbons you make (ie. the amount of fuel burnt). Everyone pays a fair and relative amount.

I'm another "put it on fuel" advocate, but I couldn't care less about the physical disc.

Government said:
... it will no longer be possible to transfer the benefit of a vehicle licence when
there is a change of registered keeper. As a consequence of this, where there is a new
registered keeper he/she will be obliged to take out a new vehicle licence when the vehicle to
which the vehicle licence relates is transferred to him/her. The reason for now preventing
vehicle licences being transferred from registered keeper to registered keeper is to avoid a
new registered keeper unknowingly keeping an unlicensed vehicle. For example, in the
absence of a paper licence a vehicle may be purchased supposedly with the benefit of a
vehicle licence. The new keeper would believe that the vehicle was licensed, but the former
keeper could apply for a refund of VED without the knowledge of the new keeper resulting
on the new keeper having an unlicensed vehicle.

Re the tax thing

Wont be much of an issue, as new buyer will just be able to tax it online and pay for it monthly.

It just means that the government gets two lots of tax for the month in which the car is sold.

OK if there is 20 million cars in the UK and say the average tax disc is £100 ( for the purpose of this exercise) divide it into months equals £8.30, so if the government receives double bubble for each car for one month at changeover, this will make an extra £160m + in revenue.

Anyone up for civil war yet ? Because its coming......

Yes, they definitely should.

That way, the person with the V8 sports car nestled away in their garage which is only brought out on nice, sunny weekends will not have to pay hundreds of pounds per year because of "emissions", when he only drives a few miles a month, and uses his everyday car the rest of the time and pays two lots of VED despite only having enough legs to drive one car at a time. And the person who drives a BMW 116D and clogs up our roads for 50 thousand miles per year, yet pays £0 VED, pays his fair share in fuel duty.

Granted it'll make fuel even more expensive but it's the only fair way to do it.

No, it's not just you - I have advocated for getting rid of the paper disc for years, but last week I got what will be my last ever tax disc and I'll admit I felt a tinge of sadness about it. End of an era!

Still a good thing that it's going though, especially for owners of convertibles, motorcycles, cars with small windscreens etc.

It would be very hard to avoid, and easier for all involved - exactly why the won't do it.

The non-transfer of the tax is another stupid decision, why do we never get u-turns when we really need them.

Just you i'm afraid. Sticking with something because "it's what we've always done" is silly IMHO.
