My GF's sister is going to look at Honda's Civics tomorrow and I said I would come along to give her a hand. She is looking at 1.8 Petrol version with these 2 below in particular:

The issue is I know nothing about them and a quick search on here results in the FN2 Type R version. Anybody own one that can give some guidance?

I'd take a 5 door over 3, there's no "memory" on the 3-door front seats so they won't return to the same spot after letting someone in the back. The rear doors are very well hidden anyway.

I own a 1.8 TypeS the QE2 has a better turning circle and I hate parking the thing (wish I'd got parking sensors) quite a bad blind spot on it too. But I have fun in it and everyone always comments on the dashboard and interior.
As others have said the 2.2 diesel is the version to get, the front seats not having memory is a pain in the arse and the key not folding annoys me. I also found out this week when the battery in the remote died that the only way to turn the alarm off is with the remote???????
A plus side is it has a very large boot and when the rear seats are folded they go flat, the cigarette charger however is in a stupid place if you want a standalone sat nav connected. I do get around 44mpg plodding about and have got 51mpg when I got bored and wanted to see if Hondas claim was true. It was.
Would I buy another civic? No
Do I regret buying the civic? At the time it fitted the bill for what I needed but now I wish I'd gone for speed instead of good space and MPG so on the edge.

Really - I thought the interior of the one I had was rubbish. Interesting at first but the piano black was difficult to keep nice and the material used on the doors quickly lost its 'pile'Lovely stuff.
I ran one a 2.2 diesel se as a company car for a couple of years. Good cars overall. Interior huge, well specified, comfy, look good, individual and in 2.2 diesel form felt quite quick (more so then the numbers would suggest). However the ride is crashy, the engine noisy and agricultural sounding and interior not all that well put together. Also the bar across the back gets in the way of the view from the rear view mirror (parking not a problem through).
Edit - remembered, also quite low slung at the front so can be easily caught out by speed cushions and humps.

Thanks for your comments. On speaking with her this afternoon I think she is aiming more towards a 5door version, and coming from a Aygo she is not fussed on it being the sporty version.
I wasn't sure on the differences on the different specs so will do another look on the autotrader and see what EX models are around to increase the options.

We own a 1.8 ES with the panoramic sunroof. Interior is lovely, lights up light the bridge of the Starship Enterprise. I can get 50mpg on a motorway run but the engine is low on torque so needs to be reved. Its spins up smoothly so its a reasonably pleasurable experience.
Parkign sensors would be good to have, the rear 3/4 visibility is poor, and the bar across the rear windowm might annoy you. It doesnt bother me though.
The rear windown really needs a wiper, and when you open the tailgate after rain water runs down the channels and you can get wet!
Would i have another? Absolutley.

Had our Civic 2.2 CDTI SE for 4 years now. It's a reliable work-horse with a spacious and futuristic interior. The ride is very harsh and the engine (although excellent) is tractor-like.
The rain water down the boot lid is annoying! I don't mind the rear windscreen bar though as it tends to help block out bright 4x4 xenons on a dark wet night.
Only issues we have had are an ABS sensor needed replacing and the auto-wipers have started having a mind of their own.
An extremely practical and solid car.
Boring as hell - will be getting a 6 series soon hopefully!

Thanks. I think that Type S is over priced but wasn't sure on the Sport model. Im going to have a look tonight and find some more cars for her to have a look at over the weekend and go from there. I think they where the initial ones she found and liked but will check again.
