First real road Golf R test in Evo this month
Discussion
Just read this months evo, interesting in that they seem to have gotten the jump on everyone else, with a real test on UK roads of the new Golf R; and interesting because just how thoughtful and thorough a drive and comparison they put it through. A really great scoop for them and a really great review.
They really make it seem as if VW has finally put the Golf into a higher level of handling, even comparing it to full time all wheel drive cars like the Impreza or Mitsu evo. This new Golf must be something else. i just wonder how they have managed to make it so good with a part time four wheel drive system- I am assuming that Haldex have gotten the response times to very fast levels. Would be interesting to see if this Haldex system was in the league of Audi Torsen systems, which are full time.
Very nice test evo, m

The response time for the last-gen. Golf R with Haldex 4 and the new one with gen. 5 are the same. It is instantaneous, as the system predicts when it will need to engage to a higher degree. In steady state cruising about 15-20 percent of torque is at the rear. In bends with lots of weight transfer going on and during acceleration, anywhere from 50-70% can go to the rear on a dry road. The difference in the drive on the new model is very likely suspension tuning. It is also nice that they finally offer a 235 width tire! They really make it seem as if VW has finally put the Golf into a higher level of handling, even comparing it to full time all wheel drive cars like the Impreza or Mitsu evo. OK, I'll bite. If it were "just" attributable to suspension tuning, why didn't they make a better go of it earlier? The reviews of the hot MQB cars have so far been night-and-day different from the equivalent PQ35-platform cars. This is good, as whilst the previous-gen Haldex S3 etc. looked smart, the drive was woeful in comparison to the competition. - The balance, brakes, steering and ride quality were simply not good enough for a "premium" product. Sure, they'd do half-decent lap times but there's more to a performance road car than that. It appears that they've finally seen the light, though they, along with others, really do nead to cease and desist fitting quad exhausts to 4-pot cars - especially when the RS Q3 has a single pipe and shows the extras to be fatuous tat.Funnily enough the "best" R Golf appeals to me the least. I liked the mk6 more, liked the mk5 R32 a lot and loved our mk4 R32.
It just somehow doesn't get the whole "subtle" thing quite right with the crazy quad exhausts and giant wheels most will ride on. I'm sure it's nice in some colours and I know looks aren't everything (look at my car!) but it matters. I'd like to drive one just to see what's it's like but with four pots, four exhausts and a slightly weird interior, I'm not desperate. If I went on the four pot route, I'd look at the A45.
One major plus of the Golf is a manual option - I hate DSG with a passion.
I enjoyed the feature on hatches (having had many) but I still think Evo's bashing of the M135i was completely unnecessary. No issues if someone doesn't like it but to praise it no end for almost two years then suddenly savage it just seems very much like headline grabbing to me.

See, the car would have to be pretty damn special for me to consider an inline four at this price level. - The R32 had a wonderful engine and that helped to justify the price. - You could give a generic inline four 600 BHP but for me, the character, sound etc. of an engine is a massive part of the appeal of a car. - I'd rather have an "old" 325i with the 218BHP straight six than the new 328i with the bland 245BHP turbo four.It just somehow doesn't get the whole "subtle" thing quite right with the crazy quad exhausts and giant wheels most will ride on. It makes a refreshing change to be given the choice. Vladimir said:

Build them up to knock them down. - They awarded 5 stars the first time they reviewed it.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
