Well I need to sell the MX5 as I'm looking for a car that's a bit more practical.
I have no idea what to get though. I've been offered a 2001 VW Polo GTI for 1 large, and it fits the bill well. Gearbox is of concern though, as they're reputed as being weak. It's just had a rebuild so hopefully it'll last a good amount of time.
What cars out there are fun and reliable all for 1k? My budget can stretch a bit higher (up to 2k)

Various fast Peugeots can be had for this money. The 306 GTi-6, possibly a 106 GTi, maybe even a 205 GTi if you know where to look and don't mind waiting for the right one to come up.
A quick search of the classifieds brings up Focus ST170s, BMW 323/5/8s, even MGFs - do not be put off by the constant HGF comments, most of them have been done by now with uprated MLS gaskets. Again, with all these it is all condition dependent, as a ropey Focus, BMW or MG (or anything really) all have potential for great financial pain if not properly cared for.
Finally, I had this scenario in Autumn last year. For less than £1k, I got myself a very tidy low mileage Ford Puma, the Thunder run-out special to be exact. It hasn't let me down as yet (touch wood) and is remarkably rust-free. They are huge fun if you chase the redline, and have a very compliant chassis. Engine and gearbox are pretty bulletproof, suspension bushes do wear but are easily put right. The only thing to watch for is rust. Have a good look at the rear arches and underneath. That said, even the rust is relatively easy to sort (Peugeot 206 front wings are an exact match for Puma rear arches!)
40mpg in mine if driven carefully as well
