I'm going to place a TV above the fireplace in my new place (it's definitely going there so please stay on track here folks and not get into a discussion about whether I should!)

It will be a Samsung LED/LCD TV and the fireplace is one of these:

Fireplace details is you need them: http://www.drufire.co.uk/product_range/dru_designe...

The fire has been installed and currently sits in a blockwork chimney as below(this was before fire was installed):

Now the fireplace people want to build an aluminium framed, fireboard clad false wall all around the blockwork as they say the TV has to be recessed into the wall as it's going over the fireplace. They say the heat from fire will be too much. My thinking is they may just be looking for extra work but I'd be interested in anyones opinion/knowledge on this.

Personally I want the TV on the wall, as opposed to recessed, as it gives more flexibility in the future in case I wanted to change TV size. The base of the TV will be around 500mm above the top of the fireplace window, possibly a little more.

I think the heat from the fire will give you extra flexibility with the TV failing due to excess heat.

After a lot of investigation today we've come to the same conclusion biggrin

Cool room. Be good to see a few pics when it's all done.

Project onto the wall. Don't put a tv on it.

Get a projector is my best advice

If it's recessed in the wall make sure they leave enough ventilation space for the fans etc. Mount it on a pull out bracket so you can get to cables etc, but you probably knew that already. Oh, and not too high or the picture will look washed out and crap, and you'll get a bad neck.

Have you got external speakers? A lot of modern TVs have speakers in the back and sound pants even before you build them into a wall.

I've cabled up the room for projector and screen but even when I put those in place I would not want that for normal TV watching.

Bracket will be as you say and the fire is nice and low so that the TV will be at a comfortable height.

I've built in a celing speaker 5.1 system for audio.

Hi Toxic - I managed to do a site visit today to see another fireplace/TV install at a house being renovated near mine so I now know the recess will be fine.
