I want to make a video of my car - advice please

I would like to make a record of my hard work.
A five minute film with exhaust sounds and music as the sound track.
With outside shots moving and stills.

Plus points
The car is interesting, 500hp with anti lag and it pops flames out the back.
So lots opportuntity for good sound effects and visuals.
I have a BA in design and a good visual eye. I paint and also build models. So I have amount of creative ability.

Negatives
I have absoultely no idea how to do this. I know nothing about cameras filming or editing. Total novice.

So on a limited budget what is the best way to go about this. Would fiming using the video setting on a standard camera be good enough? Any advice on a cost effective way to film.

Also editing once I have the sounds, music and film - how can I put it all together? Is there software that can be downloaded to do this?

Any advice welcome as to how to cost effectively go about this

Hi Scoobman

Whereabouts in the country are you?

If this is going to be a one-off it will be much cheaper & easier to hire a professional to do it, this is something that I can do (happy to send you sample links of works for some high end dealers)

Generally speaking consumer cameras are nowhere near the quality people expect, and it takes a lot of skill to get the best out of any video kit - it is nowhere near as forgiving as stills stuff (as a general rule, simplifying things massively here)

Then I'd start with a mental storyboard of what you imagine - draw it if you can, shot by shot - then work out how to realise it. Don't forget a soundtrack.

DSLRs are capable of very good video - a few hundred £ will get you going. Your main issue I think is a technical learning curve, and you will just have to chip away at it.

No problem,

I would say if you haven't picked up a camera in anger previously you are unlikely to get stellar results first time out - like anything it takes a hell of a lot of skill and practise.

Not doubting your abilities, of course, but it is how it is.

I'm able to travel out to you, like I said if you're doing it as a one-off you would be mad to buy kit. Even buying a half decent microphone will cost you more than getting a professional in for the day.
