Puma and Land Rover series two

After my defender proved to be two expensive to use to get to work and back every weekend, I sold it for a small profit after putting plenty of work into it.
So I needed something a bit fuel efficient and a bit fun so I went from the w reg silver puma that I owned before the defender and bought....

I drove it around for a week or so before I went back to work and discovered an annoying click when coming to a halt or pulling off, nothing to worry about I thought it'll only be a bush or track rod end!
Then I got it to work and into the workshop for a quick butchers underneath
So I thought I'll change the wishbone then, couldn't see any other damage but I did notice that the shock on this side was newer than the other side. Then I found this
That's the wishbone mount so had to weld that back together before I fitted the new wishbone!
When that was sorted I turned my attention to the fact it had four unmatched tyres on it and the rear two were different profile to the front two. While checking eBay I found someone selling a set of mondeo si alloys with a set of brand new tyres for £200. Even better was they were pretty much halfway between home and work!
I love how it looks now and I love driving it but I started getting land rover withdrawal symptoms so without my wifes knowledge I used the rest of the money from my defender to buy a freelander diesel needing work.
I replaced the rear shoes then decided it wasn't land rover enough for me so I chucked it up on eBay and after the original winner failed to get in contact I used the second chance offer and he guy came down with his mate to pick it up, all was going well until the headgasket went pop while test driving it!
Luckily the guy still bought it at a much reduced price! After swearing that I would never own a land rover again, it took me precisely 3 days to find, convince the wife and buy this
A beautiful 1960 series 2 88 inch fitted with a 3.3 Perkins tractor engine. It needs a little bit of work, but of rust on the bulkhead and the rear main seal is leaking more oil than a leaky thing so the engine is coming out on Monday to swap it, if that doesn't solve it it will end up being replaced with a 200tdi

Well I needed a way to get the land rover and the puma to the same place at once, the land rover to work so I could strip it down and do the jobs that were needed to it, and the puma to work so I could drive home again.
So I came up with a solution!

Well I eventually made it back after the aa came and got me, fell into bed at 0400!
So I thought I'd have a busy morning to make up for it and I have made a very exciting discovery! We don't need to worry about welding anything, simple cutting an old road sign to shape and fillering into place is quite good enough!
Also works for footwell panels as well if you add some bolts!
But this morning I have got to the point of pulling the engine out, just needed to stop for chicken and tea!

So suitably refreshed I headed back to the workshop and set about the engine, soon it was removed and on the floor so I stripped off the conversion kit ready to put that and the engine on eBay! That was the end of the first day in the workshop.
Tuesday started nice and early and I was back in the workshop to crack on, after making sure I had brought suitable brew and lunch with me!
The next job was to remove the bulkhead as it became obvious that it was beyond saving, as it turned out it was so far gone, I didn't need to remove the bolts running through the outriggers as both bottom corners had rotted away!
I also started to discover just how bad the person who had done the work to the land rover in the past had been! As well as the fillered road sign over the dumb irons, there was also some more of the sign riveted and fillered over the bulkhead, there was a final bit riveted over the rusty bulkhead outrigger as well!
The fuel return line was just fed through an unsealed hole in the top of the tank! Overall just someone that shouldn't be allowed near a toolbox again!
Then as a final part to Tuesday I pulled the seat box out, with all of 7 bolts holding it on!
As I only had Wednesday morning to work on the land rover, I decided to remove the front axle so I could get access to replace the dumb irons and also strip and clean up the front springs.
I have also aquired a v8 engine but I can't decide wether to fit that or go for my original plan of fitting a 200tdi engine.
I also started to reform the road sign!
So that brings me to today, I am sat in my room about to head down to the workshop, I think today I will have a dig out of the bulkhead and see just how bad it is!
I bought it off eBay, knowing it had a bit of rust on the bulkhead but I even checked the dumb irons and to be fair they were bodged so well that they passed as solid!
I stripped the bulkhead down fully today and it is even worse than I expected! It has rust on both footwells, both a posts, one top corner, the rail beneath the windscreen, the top dash tray, the bottom dash tray, both bulkhead to chassis mounts are still attached to the chassis, plus other spots throughout!
Luckily as well as the school for army mechanics, this is also the school for army metalsmiths and one of the instructors, who is a simply amazing welder, has agreed to help me fix it up and in return I will help him swap the engine in his sons mondeo.

I got bored of only taking one land rover apart so I decided that what I needed was to take a second apart!
This poor innocent lamb entered my workshop not knowing what it was in for!
Picked up for the sum of £350 with gearbox failure and a bit of rust. 2 and a half days later it looks like this!
Only got the rear axle and steering box to remove now!
The engine is destined for my series while the rest is in eBay or sold to anyone who walks pasts and inquires! Chassis is destined to go on and become a trailer for someone I work with!
It turns out I have bought the rustiest disco known to man! Both sills have no metal, inner and outer, for the full length, both inner wings completely gone, passenger footwell completely gone, both rear arches completely gone, I put my foot through the rear floor! Even the chassis is rusted!
It also turns out that the gentleman who runs the vehicle museum is also very good friends with a gentleman by the name of Mr Phillip Bashall and he is going to find out for me if he has access to a replacement bulkhead, if not it will be on with the welding!

I have been pretty slack with updating this but in my defence I have moved house and units!
My July the 30th plan was well and truly smashed so with a moving date set and my new house having a drive, I had to get the Land Rover assembled enough to put it on a trailer!
It made it to this point before moving!
And after a fun filled journey involving totally inappropriate towcars and a mercedes Vito van determined to ruin any reputation of reliability before dying completely when I needed it most!
The Vito was quickly sold and I purchased, for the sum of £625, a disabled adapted fiat scudo van complete with wheelchair ramp and winch! Was originally going to be used for motocross bikes but plans have changed and it will be put up for sale when the Land Rover is mot'd.
It is now on my drive and today I pushed it back into my garden so I have some space to work on around it. I have the next three weeks off work and this first week eldest is still at school and middle daughter is at nursery for two of the days so I have told my wife this week is dedicated to finally getting the Land Rover sorted and on the road so I can sell my van and go back to just having the Land Rover.
His name has also changed, as the colour scheme is now yellow and black he is now called buzz!
I have ordered my new seatbox with battery box and other niff naff and trivia and the exhaust has been modified to the 2.5 n/a manifold, that still needs a little fettling to fit.
Other jobs include finishing the wiring, making a guage mount for the temp and volt gauges, making a tool to fit the lower suspension bushes, fitting the lower suspension bushes, getting the engine running again and going for the mot!

Ha ha. my last 3 bosses were REME and one even threw a tantrum because we didn't have any bolts for his VFR800i fairings. Another made an enclosed trailer for his kit car using Ali obtained from the metal smiths bay and we all had a b

I had wolf wheels on my defender, well to be exact I had Land Rover HD wheels on it that the army also uses on the wolf! The amount of people that were convinced I had pinched them and left a wolf on bricks somewhere!

Managed to get the battery box partly fitted but my rivet lazy tongs have decided to pack in so I have fitted it using bolts and will reinforce with extra rivets when I get a chance.
I also managed to get the exhaust fitted completely, unsurprisingly for a blue label product the joins don't look amazing but hopefully will he has tight!
Also managed to sort a possible mount for the temp guage but I'm not 100% happy with it so it may change.
Discovered that I appear to have lost the fuel return pipe and banjo which is pretty annoying!
