Cycling Apps - Navigation in particular
Discussion
I'm using strava to monitor my speed, distance, route, etc to track what I'm doing and calories burnt etc. However I'm getting a bar mount for my iPhone and I'd like a navigation app so I can download a route I can design on computer/website and then have the iPhone guide me turn by turn around the route whilst I'm out. Does something suitable like this exist for iOS? (I think you can do something like this with a high end garmin, but figure there must be something equivalent for an iDevice?)

Yeah it's my mates Garmin 500 which I'd basically like to emulate. But before dropping several hundred quid on a Garmin I'd like something app based so I can use my phone. I normally only do 2-3hrs riding at the moment so I'm willing to give the phone battery a chance at this.
I do appreciate a Garmin is the right answer but having started riding only a couple of months ago I've already spent plenty on bike accessories and clothes and i just dont have the budget for a Garmin just now. So if someone can point me to an app that will tide me over until a Garmin is reasonable for me!!

I've had a look at the mapmyride website and app. I've been able to make a route on the website easy enough, and "sent it to" the free app on my phone. When I click "do workout" it pulls up the map of the route and shows my current location. Doesn't seem to do "turn by turn" nav, and a quick google confirmed that (was the case 11mths ago). So I assume that the map just scrolls and shows my position relative to the map, so I have to keep an eye on it to make sure I don't miss junctions. I've not tried it yet, but can anyone confirm that's how it works? I'll bar mount my phone and then I guess the screen needs to be "always on" for me to view the map.
Seems like it will do what I want, will give it a try next weekend. If anyone else has other suggestions, let me know. Would be cool if there was one which could play turn by turn voice nav over the top of your music. So you could have one earbud in to listen to tunes and the tunes are faded down and a voice comes in to tell you when to turn! Would mean you didn't need to bar mount the phone or keep the screen alive. I know Google Maps app for iPhone does this, but I don't know how to get a route plan into google maps. Any ideas on that one?

I've had to scope out routing apps for some research funding proposal I'm putting together. The various generic sites are reliant of the routing engines to do the work. You can compare them here...

Cyclestreets is very good for the uk, but not the only option.
http://www.gpxeditor.co.uk/ - the audax routing is really good.
http://cycle.travel/map - nice cartography
Any routing is only as good as the map data. Around here, for instance, google is awful. It's very happy to try to send you across the moors on cattle tracks. Cyclestreets around here will happily route you up an offroad set of stairs up a 300m hill.
