dvla reg headache

Basically in March 13 I purchased a private plate from the dvla auction. I never got around to putting it on my car. I had a renewal notice come through a few weeks ago and about 2 weeks before it was due to expire on 15th March I posted the renewal document off with a cheque for £25. I waited until this friday and gave them a ring as I hadn't received the new document back.
According to their records they never received the document and my entitlement has expired. They told me to write a cover note and include a cheque for £25 and they would try to process it.

is there anything I can do to ensure I get the plate back or has it effectively been lost?

Check your bank account to see whether the first cheque has been paid.

Next time, renew online!

I had same problem couple of years ago. Due to family drama I totally forgot to renew the document.

Wrote a crawling letter (Yes it really annoyed me to do it) & they just extended it as if I had got the paperwork to them on time.

I forgot once. It went a good few months over. Sent a covering letter and got a new cert through with no issue.

Before I sent the new cheque I checked online to see if the old one had been cashed and it hadn't.

iv written a cover note nust stating that I had posted it and hopefully they could process it again.

I realised I hat the dvla.

Has anyone actually lost entitlement due to late payment?

I would imagine that someone with too much money and with other priorities could well overlook the renewal fee of a retained plate worth tens of thousands of pounds.

Would they really lose it??
