Another what....tyre...apologies

Guys

Looking to get 2 new tyres for the wifes Golf. Budget £100 per tyre.

Anyone have any experience of Michelin Primacy 3, Dunlop SP01 or Goodyear Efficient Grips?

I've never fitted anything other than Continetal's to my own motor but I'm starting to think they are not such a great choice. A friend and a relative cannot recommend Avons highly enough.

Buying tomorrow just thought I'd get some thoughts from you lovely people.

Don't know if your wife's Golf is a performance model (GTi, R etc) or if it's a more modest choice, but I've stuck 4 Avon ZV5s on my wife's Touran Tdi 140 and they're perfectly adequate. Plenty of dry grip, wet grip seems good handling standing water well. I have no idea how well they wear yet, or how progressive they are because, well, they're on a Touran

I'd recommend them for the money.

It won't be a GTI or R if the wheels are 16 inches!

Rather opposite end of the scale but our VW California had Dunlop Sports and they seem pretty good. 235/55 17".

Uniroyal Rain Experts.

Got them fitted, in the same size as you're looking for, on my Octavia.

Still good tread depth after nearly 38k miles of all year round use.

For use on a regular (i.e. non sports) car, under normal driving conditions (not driven like you stole/hired it), I highly recommend these.

Only set of Avons I had probably 17/18years ago on a Cavalier Sri 134bhp ecotec. Now it might be the car but I had a lot of loss of traction in it.

I fitted Michelin Exalto2's to my Fiat a our following on from Eagle F1's I only lost traction while in 3rd gear WOT hit water unseen revs spun up but apart from that one incident not once did I lost traction and I drove them hard.


P6000's terrible truly terrible I wish I'd changed them from the last car when we bought it but they had 6mm all round so couldn't justify it.

I've driven on every tyre recommended in this thread, mostly in your size and on a Golf.

The answer is:

It depends what you want from the tyre.

Avon ZZ5's on my wife's Audi S4, been impressed so far. Only issue I have with them is noise on the motorway.

on the driven wheels?? I'm lucky to get 12-15k out of my tyres, they are only on a modest saloon.

Michelin's are on just now and the only reason I'm changing is because there are cracks right around the tyre walls. Around 4mm tread left - the car is an 08 plate (bought 4 weeks ago) with only 25k on the clock, so I'm sure they have been on since new and perishing with age.

I have read a lot of good things about the Michelin bluresponse. I think I'll check prices on the Avon's,bluresponse and those Uniroyal's. 38k - that's the longest I've heard of for a set.

What's the date stamp of all 4 tyres?

Look for the DOT then this 4 digit number will be opposite it. The first two are the week number the second two the year so say a 0910 is a tyre made in week 9 Feb/March 2009

I got Avon ZR5's for my Passat. They seem like a really good tyre being quiet and grippy in all conditions. They don't seem to wear too badly either.

I got mine on a buy one get one free promotion.

I have Avons ZZS tyres fitted to the front of my Mondeo ST, and I don't really rate them. They are not great in the wet and I just think there can a lot better had for the same money. I've just fitted Goodyear Eagle F1s to the back, and intend to do the same to the front when these wear out. That is one plus point I can make for the Avons, they're on a 230bhp heavy estate car that is driven enthusiastically (and seen a track day) and they are 9000 miles old, still with 3ish mm of tread left.

Edit: £100 per tyre for a 16inch wheel on a 1.4 golf is a big budget! I got the Goodyears for £105/tyre fitted at 225/40/18.

I'd go for the Avons, but out of the three you quoted it would be Goodyear Efficient Grips for me.
