AHHHH a what car for hater of driving

Need to think of a car for the better half for town driving.
Has to be a small petrol engine able to do over 40 mpg around the city, Budget would be around 10k ( I want it to be around £500 and a half eaten mars bar that I found in the back seat of my Alfa when I bought it)but for that she would want no more than 1-2 years old at a push.
Now my mother has suggested a chevy spark and I suggested the kia piccanto 1.25 but is there anything out there better?

Bought a Honda Jazz for the Mrs the other week. 1.2 VTEC is a shade under 90bhp meaning it's comfortable enough on the motorway, but more frugal than I would have believed. She's getting about 50mpg out of it, and got 62 on a motorway run. Externally it doesn't seem much bigger than her previous Fiesta, with a really short bonnet and near vertical rear meaning it's easy to park, but you can fit a 6' passenger in behind a 6' driver, and it's still got a decent boot. I'm very impressed.

Quickest threat ever?Showed her a jazz online and she likes it,Saw the 1.4 engine is still in the mpg range but have to check if she could get one in the budget, May have to be the 1.2 which looks good spec wise.
If only picking a car was this easy and simple all the time,Only thing she will need to wait on is the right spec and car within the budget but looks like there is lots of choice.
Will see in the morning if she just said that type of car just to get to bed early or not.

SE spec is plentiful and has all you need. 1.2 vtec is same power as older 1.4 dsei, if its mainly in town does she need the thirstier 1.4 vtec? Very slightly O/T, anyone know how it compares to a (next segment up) cee'd for interior space? My OH also has one, as you say it's very good at cramming lots of interior in. You can even see well out of it for once! 
I was thinking the cee'd if you valued comfort/refinement a little more, I've never experienced a supermini that *quite* has the refinement of cars the next segment up.
Ok update time....... My wife hates me,It is the only thing I can think of.
It now seems that this car is expected to be OUR car,
She has decided that the Alfa is costing a fortune in repairs (and with a 1k+ bill to come up soon and over 1.5k bills in the 6 months of ownership, I can sort of see her point),Costing a fortune in fuel(I do not agree on that) that she would like to have a small engined car able to do 40mpg and cheap to run,New-max of 3 years old if can prove documented history etc.
The upsale has already started and it looks like it has to be a Susuki Swift sport or a Citroen DS3(the 1.6 HDI Dsport looks good she thinks)
My thinking would be a 2-3 year old car for the budget and with owning a old swift for 2.5 years back late 90's early 00's and never having any trouble she may be turned.( just not going to tell her no way will I average over 40mpg in it)
