Diesel estate - 3k

A colleague is after a diesel estate for 3k. As I've never looked for anything like this, I thought I'd ask you lot. My first instinct was a diesel Octavia but just in case I'm missing a trick...

The Skoda is a good shout, but I think a Volvo V70 is a better once if he needs plenty o' space.

Ones we looked for when we were searching for a similar car were:

Saab 9-5
Skoda Octavia
Audi A6
Jaguar X-type
Ford Mondeo


Ended up with a Saab 9-5. Roomy, comfortable, looks nice (in my opinion), 2.2 diesel engine is a bit agricultural (it's the same engine in Vauxhalls of that era) and not the most powerful, but it does the job. It could do with a sixth gear for motorway cruising TBH.

You missed the Mercedes CClass with the 220cdi engine, plenty about for a mini wafter...

The 2l VAG diesel of that era/price point has some issues AIUI, as do the Mazda diesels. Does he do the mileage to justify a diesel?

I sold my old C220 cdi for £2k.

Whilst not exactly exciting it did cover the best part of 45k miles over 2 years with relatively few issues, good mpg which suited me at the time.

I replaced it with a 3.0 tdi A4 quattro which is a much nicer car to drive but a fair bit more expensive to buy for similar age and millage

I think either would be a reasonable choice

Haha sorry!

It won't be used around town at all - cycles everywhere.
It'll be mainly long motorway trips (Bristol - Lake District round trip) and generally long motorway wafts with man, woman, baby, and stuff in the car.

ZT-T (but I'd say that. ). Driving it I find the BMW diesel the weakest part of the car, which should tell you something...

If the turbo and/or the injectors go at some point (317,xxx km and counting) I'm tempted to do an 'Alpina D3' (put the turbo and inj's of a 330D on it and reprogram the management to suit)... I like it that much. The only thing I hate about it right now is its propensity to shred expensive rubber for some unknown reason right now, and the rear bumper seems to have gained magnetic properties lately for another unknown reason (good thing it's a solid old beast then).
