Mirror frame fracture - common fail apparently
Discussion
Hi all,
The frame (aluminium?) in my OS mirror has fractured at the base, causing the mirror to come off.
According to the Racing Green website, this is a common fault and replacement mirrors are no longer available. The do a repair but you have to send the mirror off of course and I use mine daily so not so convenient.
Mirrors from breakers appear to be circa £150.
Anyone tried welding repairs or liquid metal epoxy to repair them ?
Cheers, Matt

Is this the bit you need?

Plenty of stuff about self repairing on here. Try these if its the actual housing that's bust and not the mount, there are more!

Sadly no. I'd found that part and was hoping for the easier fix.....but no.
Thanks for the links though. Lots of bedtime reading !

OK so I got the mirror off the car and the broken parts of the mirror frame out thanks to the good pictures on this forum and those in Steve Heath's book.
Steve's book suggested you could get the torx screw out by accessing from inside the door (presumably through the mounting boss). It looks like it was designed to be removed like that but as there is an angle change in the collapsable column part, you can't just use a torx screwdriver. I tried a flexi drive but the length between the boss and the screw is too short to get the flexible bit of the drive out of the door, so hardly any flexing possible.
I managed to remove the mirror using a torx bit and pliers as shown on these forums but now that I have repaired the mirror and the housing and collar piece will be around the collapsable column, I don't think that technique will work on refitting.
Am thinking I could replace the torx with an M6 bolt as a wobble-socket may allow the angle change. I have also noticed torx allen keys are available and wonder if these could be slipped under the plastic collar.
Any other suggestions chaps ?
Thanks.

With the boss removed (the bit that the grub screw tightens on), you can access the torx screw head easily.
I replaced mine with a through bolt and nut. You'll have to tighten this up first before putting the boss back on and screwing the whole lot into the door. It can be trial and error deciding where the boss is positioned to tighten the grub screw up.

Yes, that's the way.I replaced mine with a through bolt and nut. You'll have to tighten this up first before putting the boss back on and screwing the whole lot into the door. It can be trial and error deciding where the boss is positioned to tighten the grub screw up.
OK well, I managed to screw the mirror back on without taking off the collapsable column but flippin'eck it was hard.
I replaced the torx screw with a cross-headed pan-head M6 set screw. My thinking was that you can drive a cross head from an angle, unlike the torx bolt.
With the wiring running back through the door boss, you need quite a thin screw driver of just the right length to do it but it is possible and it's really a two-man job (lucky my wife is also an engineer so doesn't mind helping out now and then!).
The main problem was that the orange wire from the door release button got trapped in between the base of the mirror and the top of the column, which was a right pain.
Mirror now secure better than it has ever been.
I'll put some pics on when I get them off the camera.
