Career Advice (IT)

Hi Guys

Just after abit of advice regarding a possible slight career change, currently working as a 3rd line Infrastructure Wintel enginner at a FTSE250 company. I have been lucky that I came stright from Education into this job 3 years ago, I have recently seen a job advertisement for a Junior Sys admin role at a large FTSE company doing Solaris/UNIX/Sun Storage (SAN). Now I understand that both jobs are supporting completley different enviroments.

My query is that would you see moving to this role as a good move for the future, I understand that I may take a slight paycut (however no pay grade is mentioned on the Advert) for the short term but I am looking to the future prospects and career oppertunities as I am still young.

Any opinions would be great, good or not.

That'll be a hard jump to make with your background.

Try for the same type of role with a Wintel\VMWare\Netapp or EMC skillset.

Thanks for your reply, I did understand that it will be a pretty massive change in terms of current knowledge and environment. My thought process would be as im still under 25 while I am young and on paper unexperianced would be good to move to unix/linux if it would be better for my job prospects in the future (more Wintel admins than Linux).

I would be more intrested going into storage if I do not apply/be sucessfull in this job opportunity

My suggestion would be to cross-train yourself in either Linux or Storage Tech? If you are a permie, ask your employer for training?

I am speaking as an ex-Accountant, who went techie...Contracting in IT in the UK past 14 years, so I speak from whenst I come?
