MNR Vortx weld issues
Discussion
Sorry chaps, going overboard on the "can o' worms" threads as I try to learn about kitcars.
I'm looking at buying an MNR vortx so I've been reading up on them a bit and I've seen a couple of mentions of welds failing (one was a rear wishbone mounting point). Was this a known problem with the early versions of these cars or were they freak accidents (possibly from existing damage?). The car I'm looking at has outboard suspension so I think it's an oldish one; am I right in thinking the newer ones all have inboard suspension?

I don't remember hearing about repeated failure of MNR welds specifically.
If you read enough you will find reported problems with suspension pick up points on kit cars ranging from Dutton to Ultima, MK to Caterham. Yes even Ultima and Caterham!
A lot of this is how they are used and what they were designed for.
There are race chassis used on road and track that break diff mounts. Cars running slick tyres on track that bend fabricated uprights. The list goes on and on.
A lot of owners who use their cars hard end up beefing up quite a lot of bits on the cars and see it as development.
I guess you have to remember that they are built to a price, without much if any real development and testing. Most of the development comes later from experience gained through customers. To be fair most of the kits still around are pretty good and I wouldn't expect anything to fall apart with regular driving.
My advice would be to buy one suitable for what you want it for. If it's for track days get one developed for that.
Keep it clean and check everything regularly.
