Touring Cars at Goodwood: Time For Tea?

Highlights from yesterday's Gerry Marshall trophy to accompany your afternoon beverage

An excuse was need to witter on about the Gerry Marshall trophy from yesterday's Goodwood Members' Meeting again. Fortunately, one has emerged in the form of this highlights reel.

Some of the editing isn't ideal, with the action switching just as you want to fully enjoy a car roaring past, but it's difficult not to smile nonetheless. At any straight the Camaros tear past everything, there are Minis screaming round on three wheels and Tiff Needell resorts to barging rivals in an attempt to pass. Great stuff.

A special mention for the victorious Rover SD1 too. The other V8 Rovers sounded pretty glorious but this was something else altogether. Brazen and vicious, its noise ripped through the air like nothing else.

Good to see proper saloon cars racing like this - oversteer, understeer, three wheeling, V8's - epic stuff.

Even better to see one of my old team cars, the Patrick MotorSport Rover V8, taking the flag.

The boss will be chuffed to pieces when I let him know that the car lives & is a winner again!!!

Not a shame at all. You have the FOS and even the Revival now for the masses. It was precisely the lack of the extra 100,000 people that made the weekend so civilised and enjoyable to a large extent. It was the FOS getting too popular that killedit for me and the Revival is going the same way. This was like the FOS in its first two yrs and then the Revival in its first two yrs.

I got an invite to go but only if I paid £120 for a 2 day pass. Would have gone but had a sprint on sunday, and when offered I could not just choose one day. However, a friend was later offered 1 day tickets so I assume they were lowering their high standards as they were not selling as many tickets as they planned. Looked a great event though and worth the money.

Not sure I understand, Ithought they had opened the tickets up to everyone, even selling on the gate.

Not sure why Tiff Needell resorting to barging to get by is so great - it wasn't his car. Hope he paid for any damage.

Brilliant love those Capri's, the Triplex Rover (I had a Scalextric version of that car) the Alfa Gtv6 and that blue Mini- how did they make a 1275 Gt go that quickly? !

Just love the old style touring cars, so much more like the cars you drove on the road. Not like the mega bucks they spend today to try and get the excitement they lost over the years.

The 'blue mini' is a hand built replica of the 1275GT that won the British Saloon Car Championship outright in 1978 & again in 1979 so it sold be quick!

I thought, until earlier, that the car at Goodwood was the original however the title winning car is not currently in race worthy trim

The car, sponsored by Patrick Motors Group, run by Patrick Motorsport & pedalled superbly by Richard Longman is still living somewhere in Birmingham.

The replica, the Mini raced at Goodwood looks amazing & I hope to see it race sometime this season.

Oddly my Scalextric Triplex & PMG Rovers are both sitting on my dining room table while I decide whether to keep them, & my other 1500 model cars, or whether to sell them!!!

Got to disagree about the SD1 noise. The #9 Esso-liveried car was considerably louder and more strident than the winning #23 car.

Shame I didn't know about it. Spent an afternoon kicking my heels while SWMBO was shopping.

I've always had a soft spot for Goodwood since doing driver training there and attending the original FOS. Lost touch since leaving the UK sadly.
