DRL's and sidelights, do I need both?,,
Discussion
I want to use DRL's on my motor so do I need both drls' and sidelights for the IVA or can I now use just drl's as sidelights? I've read that they must turn off anyway when the headlights are on, do side lights stay on then? Sorry if it's clearly stated and I've not worked it out!! Thanks all...
Don't think so. Section 22, point 27, under DRL says:
"They must extinguish automatically when headlights are operated (see note 6)"
"Note 6: Daytime running lamps. The lamps must be connected so
that they switch off automatically when the headlamps are on.
(Except for when the headlamps are flashed). "
Maybe if you had something with a dim sidelight mode and a bright DRL mode it would count as two lights in the same unit? Would get a bit complicated though...you'd actually be doing 3 functions with a single lamp; position lamps, parking lamps, DRL. The first two are normally both done with the sidelights, and the manual explicitly states that this is allowed. It doesn't state that about DRLs so I'd assume not...

As from today, the use of DRL's is being abolished in order to help the environment/lessen global warming.
Anyone who has a car fitted with DRL's will have to take the car to their local dealer to get the DRL's removed at the owner's expense, and take the vehicle to their local VOSA station to get it certified as compliant.

While my wife's Kia is not a kit, the DRL's dim when sidelights/headlights are on and don't turn off. So as long as you overcomplicate everything you should be fine! "They must extinguish automatically when headlights are operated (see note 6)"

Sure, and lots of road cars have trim inside which would fail on an IVA edge test. Type Approval is not the same as Individual Vehicle Approval, and arguing "but my road car does it" won't get you very far with the man from VOSA.
