I take it is a pre serp.

Did you pack the pump with vaseline upon rebuild.. It wont prime without.

Had the same issue, I got lucky and J.E. managed to find a replacement front cover...maybe worth giving him or v8d a call?

Hi
Regardless of what people say about serpentine engines....
They can empty their pump of oil. , very rarely
And they can be primed ! And easier than preserps !!

You ll need one of those £12 draper oil syringes for filling a diff or gear box .
Jack up the front right corner and remove the wheel
Going in thru the wheel arch you will see the oil pressure relief valve and a bolt just above it
Remove both
Pump oil in the top hole until it comes out the bottom hole
Replace oilpressure relief valve and its circlip
Pump oil into top hole again until it begins to come back out of the hole you are pumping it into !
Replace the bolt
Turn over engine with splugs out and fuse for fuel pump pulled
This " should " create suction in the pump and start it pulling oil from the sump

Ive needed to do it twice over the years and its worked both times.

Hope this helps/ works/isn't patronising etc. !

has happened to me also, I now drain and part refill so the oil pickup I submerged before replacing the filter...this way the oil doesn't come out the pump as it creates a vacuum behind in the pickup tube (a trick I learnt on my old pre serp 500.

I can't see the point at all of going to all the trouble (& risk) of removing the pressure relief valve? I'll try & explain my thinking...

Pumping oil down any of the oil switch hole / side bung (oil cooler return on LR) / oil pressure sensor hole (oil cooler takeoff on LR) is normally sufficient to force oil into the timing cover / filter. Filling the galleries seems to give the (airy) pump something to push against which is normally enough for it to self prime.

Only pumping oil down the PRV or up the oil pressure sensor hole is guaranteed to push oil into rotorvator & down the pickup pipe to the sump as the other ways have to go through the oil filter (may have anti drain back valve). It is advisable whilst doing this to rotate the engine so that all the vanes in the pump get oiled.

Personally I'd rather pipe oil up from the oil pressure sensor hole (under the front) as this pushes oil straight into the pump and avoids any conflicts with the drain back valve in the oil filter. That way you really are priming the pump rather than just giving it some pressure to push against (never really been comfortable with that scenario ~ but it works in many cases ie squirting oil up the output of the filter....)

OP new gears for the pump are available, they are the same across 3.9 serps and later 4.0./4.6 engines so easier to source than timing covers.
