what ratio gearing for spa ?
Discussion
How much fasters will I be going at spa ??? anybody tech ideas or experience ?
other than u tube videos, anyone know a way of working out what gearing I will need, dont want to overgear the car & kill it coming out the corners but neither do I want to bouncing it off limiter.
Here the details
1600 kilo V8 supercar 650 bhp, fairly decent aero but will be braking fairly early
1:1 top gear, 6500 limiter, 680 height tyres
I currently run a 3.25 diff at the fast uk tracks silversotne/snetterton & a 3.5 at the rest of them, which is perfect, ie nearly on the limiter at the fast parts of the track.
Im guessing a 3.0 would be ok ie 10 % higher top speed, beacuse wont be going that much faster than snetterton ?

Here's what I did before racing the Escort at Silverstone. Escort is a rally car with a 5.1 diff.
I had data on the lap timer from Cadwell so I could work out how fast I was doing at the end of Park straight or the start straight based on exit speed from Charlie's and Barn. Used Google Earth to compare lengths of straights with Silverstone and extrapolated the speeds to work out that I should hit the limiter in top about 20 yards before the braking point into Luffield. I was OK at Stowe.
I wasn't working out ratios, simply whether it was likely to go bang or not.
As it turned out , as Hangar is downhill and Wellington up, the speeds were pretty much the same at the end of each and a smudging under the limiter.
You could do similar using data you have from uk circuits and applying testicular mass factor for Au Rouge. Not sure how you will calculate the losses in acceleration due to gearing up though. You're on your own there.

sounds like the 3.0 will be right for the job then, so no more eurosaloons for you then Darren ? and craig your boys have moved on from classic thunder ?
good to hear from you both
Yes, we sold the Sagaris and Danny is racing in the caterham R300 championships this year, good luck with your racing mate, you'll love Spa and it should suit all that torque from your car, good to hear from you both
