So I have just bought Mrs H a 40k mile RRS, she has had it less than a month and done about 400 miles in it and the brake pads worn message has just popped up on the dash.

Now they won't be masses in the grand scheme of things but it was bought from a main dealer and I just think it is a bit off of them to supply a £40k approved used car with that sort of wear on a consumable item like pads.

So what do the PH collective think, am I expecting too much or do I have a point and do I raise it with them?

I'd be asking for a goodwill gesture towards the cost of replacement.

Is it acceptable that they sold you a vehicle with brake pads very close to being worn out?

It's the kind of thing you would hope they wouldn't do but I suspect the dealer simply goes on the wear indicator anyway so wouldn't have even checked them.

You could take it in to be done and raise this issue in the hope of a goodwill contribution but I don't think there is much you can do.

Most main dealers tend to make a point that they do a 749 point check on the vehicle before it goes on the forecourt. You could certainly argue that you shouldn't expect to be replacing items after just 400 miles, and i'd ask them to do it for free. After all, it's why you paid main dealer prices rather than going to the dodgy garage down the road.

Id be very surprised if they didn't replace those for free.
Particularly given main dealer tactics come service time of sucking their teeth in and saying "You'll need new discs and pads any day now. There's only 5 centimetres left on each"

Yup. Most likely was raised to saleman/woman before the car was released to you and they didn't want to pay for it and hurt their commission.

I remember being told that my tyres only had 4mm of tread left on them and I really should be replacing them biggrin

I'd be expecting those to be replaced by the dealer. That's pretty poor of them to supply it like that, but every penny counts, I guess.

I'd expect them done for free.

Buying AUC you are paying premium prices and should expect premium care.

The car shouldn't come with pads on the limit. They should have been changed prior to it being sold.

I would echo the views of what has already been said in that if they do require replacement I would be requesting at least a contribution.
There is the arguement they are consumables and what's to say the last 400 miles were not spent going around Cadwell Park or the 'Ring' or indeed descending down miles of Alps or Welsh hills fully laden.

I would speak to the dealer and hear their thoughts on the matter, but asking politely rather than a "I want new brakes you rogue" approach driving

It could just be a faulty wear sensor. Either way they should sort it imo.

This was my email to the dealer: -

Subject was Car Reg number

We purchased the above vehicle from you on March 14th and have done only a few hundred miles of around town driving. It is already booked in to have a faulty reversing camera replaced, which is fine as it is just one of those things and is actually a LR known fault.

However today my wife was out driving and the brake pad worn message has come up on the dashboard, now I freely accept that could be a fault and I will look at the pads when I get home however if they are indeed worn I am nothing if not disappointed that a main dealer would sell an approved used vehicle with its associated premiums and advertised as subject to a “multipoint check” with substantially worn brake pads.

Can you advise me by reply what you can do about rectifying this situation please?

I have had a reply that says the service manager will be in touch.

So I will wait and see what they say!

A bit pompus if I may say rather than a friendly approachable manner. Not an email which I would read and think, yes I'll bend over backwards for this chap / customer.

Just my thoughts.

I'd agree I'm afraid. There was no need to mention the reversing camera - it's already being sorted as you say. Exact mileage since purchase would help your case rather than "a few hundred miles" also.

All the threes - 3, 3, 3.

Most normal garages would have a minimum on tread of 3mm, 3000 miles or 3 months use on a secondhand car before any components need replacing.

Email a tad over the top.

I would imagine if they are worn they'll replace as a goodwill gesture as it's not a massive job and an easy way to show some good customer service.

It's more than likely a genuine oversight as most premium dealers have a reputation to uphold

Bought my car main dealer approved used the other week and it will need 4 new tyres soon.

TBH I didn't really notice they all had about 2mm and assumed they would be all OK as it was an approved used car.

I probably wouldn't have mentioned it anyway.

I couldn't really expect them to replace all 4 tyres; someone has to replace them and the garage need to make some money out of the car.

Why email? This is an issue to speak to them about, not email.
