Is it just me or has the rule that I was taught to mirror then if safe to do so signal and execute the manoeuvre . It seems to me a lot of drivers these days just indicate and pull out without consideration of the traffic or sit with the indicator on until you pass.

The indicator on is defensive driving I think (although it sounds more like offensive)
It's popular with trucks, to see if someone will give them a space to overtake.

They know what they are doing, they won't just start to pull out in a couple of seconds, but hopefully someone will spot their attention, and drop back instead of giving a steady stream of overtaking cars.

You probably do the same thing when merging, indicator on, more as a request to leave some space to allow you to slot in.

The problem would be where people believe that others should make every effort to give them a space, and it isn't just a request.

They indicate? Wow. Round here they usually just make the manoeuvre.

Usual M.O. on motorways for most folk seems to be manoeuvre, (maybe) signal. That's it, no mirror, ever, often no signal.

Guess I must be from the old school I certainly never indicate until I have confirmed it is safe to follow up with the manoeuvre. Thanks for the feedback guess I will just have to consider a slower car and stick to the inside lane lol.

Same here. Indicating seems to be an alien concept to a lot of drivers these days. I assumed that it must have been removed from the test!

I find this hard to believe. If you are travelling in bumper to bumper traffic on a 2 lane road where the lane you are in is closed off in front. Your actions will be one of:

Indicate as a request to someone to let you merge or You dont indicate and just forcefully merge.

In such traffic situations there will be no opportunity for you to execute the perfect MSM as you have described above

I'm a Driving Instructor, and I teach it as the following;

If moving off from the kerb,

All round observations (6 point check)
Signal if needed (is there anyone to benefit from seeing it?)
Final check on right shoulder
If clear, move off.

In traffic situations where traffic is moving slowly or bumper to bumper

All round observations (6 point check)
Signal, to show your intent to join traffic lane
Final check and absolute confidence driver allowing you to join has seen you and is waiting
If clear, move off

Never had an issue going to test with the above method.

What I have observed on motorways recently is that "Signal" from a car in the slow/middle lane means that the car in the faster lane *has* to speed up to close the gap and prevent me from pulling into his lane, and *has* to be met with flashing lights, honking, waving arms and shouting if I dare to make the move before I can be blocked in.

A signal means the idiot is coming out whether he should or not, so start braking.

Round these parts it seems popular to indicate just after your manoeuvre

I don't know about being removed from the test, but the facility seems to have been removed from most recent German cars...

Another habit prevalent on the Midlands motorways is to move the indicator stalk at the same time as the wheel is turned, saves energy by not having to move the left hand, just catch the stalk with the little finger on the way past!

And the even more usual MO for most people these days when JOINING a motorway, is to do what I call the 'beeline' manoeuvre...but why is this? Is it what they think is normal and ok, or are they just in a total and mental hurry ALL the time???

Anyway, it consists of:

Down the sliproad, offside indicator flashing away.

Get to broken white lines, pull onto motorway in any gap - as small as just enough to fit the car in is 'ok' - even if it causes someone already on the motorway to have to brake to accommodate it rolleyes

But it's OK, right? Because they'll pretty soon be - and I mean in a matter of seconds - in lane three, woohoo!

So yeah - 'beeliners' - join a motorway and get to lane three at all costs within seconds of joining the motorway. Dicks.

Worse still is if you have a 'beeliner' behind you when joining. You carefully join, and establish yourself onto lane 1 before looking in the mirror and over your shoulder to determine if lane 2 is clear enough to enter, because there is a slow-moving lorry in front.

But forget that mate - because 'beeliner' behind is ALREADY in lane 2, and coming PAST YO ASS! Hence, even though you joined the motorway before the BL behind - you have to wait for him to go by before you can move - cos his journey is more importantz, innit?

Roadcraft says

Remember that signalling does not give you any special right to cary out the actions you have indicated

If only drivers realised this the rods might be a bit safer

What's the point of indicating when you're already doing the manoeuvre for the whole world to see? Ideally it should be about telling people what you're going to do, not what you already are.

I think he was saying that he only indicates when he's confirmed the manoeuvre is safe, which is how it should be.
