Long story short, I'm likely to be moving to the Caribbean soon with my girlfriend and am about to give my notice on my current IT contract (software/systems architecture).

I'm looking for ideas for businesses I can run online, my day job (at least to start with) is going to be underwater as a dive instructor.

I'm open to suggestions - low risk high income is preferred (of course). Any personal experience of things to look out for would be appreciated. I have savings i can use as start up capital if needed.

You could promote yourself as a private dive instructor and charge rich holiday makers big bucks? Particularly once you'd done some diving and new the area well.

Sell genuine Jamaican coconuts online. Wrap them in palm leaves and send them as presents to non resident Jamaicans? Perhaps the same with beach sand, local rum etc?

Could you sell dive equipment? It would link nicely to the day job.

I've just been through a process with my mrs about what she can do online and it's a challenge to find anything not completely saturated and hence low margin. Someone can always buy more in bulk that you and get a better price / spend more on marketing.

We managed to secure an exclusivity agreement on a type of beauty product which has a niche following. Early days, but as barriers to entry are low, gaining an edge is tough.

That said, there are some very successful online entrepreneurs on here, who hopefully will be along in a minute so we can all learn something!

Might have an issue with Customs - not keen on plant matter I think.

I'd stay with the tourist diving.

Making money online?

YouTube: either really useful, interesting videos (eg cooking) or stupid/funny videos. I think the highest earners on YT are from the latter.

ClickBank: 1. produce an ebook on something 2. ??? 3. Profit

Amazon: make a really useful, interesting blog or stupid/funny blog. Amazon affiliate product ads.

Oanda.com: learn to trade. Spend every waking hour losing money whilst enjoying the sun. biggrin

Dropshipping: find a niche product to sell that everybody wants, sell on ebay or Amazon.

It's also worth looking at what 'regular' work you can adapt to do online. A reliable broadband connection offers a lot of flexibility even beyond the obvious choices.

Other then 6 weeks or so around Christmas and New Year I've been out of the UK since October. With VOIP, email, skype I can stay in contact seamlessly with clients as well as I can in the UK. I've met plenty of other people who do similar and my money buys a lot more then it can in the UK!

If your cost of living is going to be lower than in the UK (I have no idea but it's not difficult!) then you have the ability to pitch yourself at a lower price too.

How do you find 'new' work? or is most of your work through 'existing' contacts ?

Which island are you going to? If its Grenada, you sir have probably landed my dream job.

I'd say a spin off tourist type activity is your best bet.

Funny you mention that, I skim read a bit around 6 years ago.... maybe it planted some seeds?

The Curacao thing has fallen through, so I'll be jobless and (somewhat) homeless in a month! I can't wait smile

Was a PADI dadi myself all over the carribean myself back in the day. Get a job in a resort shop for a couple of weeks or so to learn the local sites and dive culture. Then once you know what you can get away with, dock walk and offer guided diving/instruction to visiting yachts, prop checks, anti foul, search and recovery etc. Its much easier to earn a decent wage selling a shop's services to visiting yachts than as an instructor working in a shop, which is hard work.

For one off big money hits, dive the golf course's at night then ebay the white gold, 2 nights doing this will keep you for a monthsmile I had a little circuit covering one end to the other end of the carribean.

Make stuff to sell on ebay. Genuine carribean dift wood fish tank ornaments. Drill the wood and fill with melted dive wieghts turns junk to $ quite well.

Good luck, I envy yousmile
