Why no "bonnet open" warning light?

I was doing some touching up on my bonnet earlier.

Then this afternoon I went to the shops, I only noticed when I got home that my bonnet wasn't closed properly, just on the first latch.

Wouldn't a warning light on the dash be a good idea? I pretty sure no car I've owned has had one.

Do any cars have one?

Loads do. My Audi has a pic of a car with bonnet area flashing read if you do this. First car I can recall with it was a 1990 Citroen BX 19 GTi - had a sep graphic on dash for any doors/boot/bonnet open.

I drove mine with the bonnet on the latch for a day including some spirited stuff. Eek

But I have a boot open warning light and not a bonnet one.

Probably because the previous 156 had problems with bonnets flipping open?

I don't see the problem here tbh, I think a "your flies are open" light would be more useful.

I used to have a BX and I remember the little pic of the car. Couldn't remember if it showed the bonnet though.

I thought most modern cars had them these days. Maybe it's more likely if the car has an alarm fitted.

Pretty sure my car has one, given that often see cars with the bonnets not shut properly seems than quite a few modern cars either don't have this feature or people are truly wrong in the head.

Bonnets have a fail safe mechanical latch, I'd say that negates the need for a warning light?

What's quite shocking is the amount of cars that drive around 'on the latch'

I've seen a couple of new Focus ST's that look like they have open bonnets...maybe it's just a panel gap thing.

Yes but it's an Alfa, that just proves the light bulb works.

MG ZT and Rover 75 have bonnet open warning lights. And they've had them since the start, way back in 1998 when the first 75s were produced. Over 15 years ago!

Often linked to alarm - the "second latch" can be opened from outside, so light fingered types could at least have the battery and possibly other valuable stuff away. On Audi A3 and no doubt other stuff, the contact prevents alarm setting (or triggers alarm if bonnet "sprung" from outside). It also disables the wipers.
