Browsing eBay tonight when looking for a car and stumbled across a RX8 with a hot start problem. Less than a minute left was at £380, bid £400 thinking it must be worth a grand.

I bloody won it, I think its worth bugger all with some post eBay research & it's a 650 mile round trip! Not good....

Guy reckons it's a starter motor. Is this likely?

Wishful thinking there. If it was a starter he would have had it fixed and advertised it as a fully working rx8.

The engine needs a rebuild due to low compression.

Almost certainly compression problem. I've seen people saying "I fitted a new starter and the problem went away" but this is only a temporary fix.

Get a compression test done and see what it says.

I'd have said break if for parts, but you've still got the hassle of transporting it and actually breaking it down and selling it, well done. Starter motor, did you do any research at all? Worn rotor tips or apex seals more like, engine rebuild needed to get it working properly again.

Notorious for compression issue"..if your lucky the rotor tips, which can be done diy...better you than me..lol

Seriously, hot start issue is not a starter problem, the starter does the same job hot or cold.

Pick it up on a trailer. Stick it back up on Ebay at the end of the month when everyone gets paid.

If it is still fitted with the same starter motor as it left the factory with, then yes it will have hot start issues but it may also have compression issues which a newer faster spinning starter will only mask.

Hot start is usually compression issue (borked tip seals).
Still possible not a bad deal for a fairly new car, borked engine or not
I hope you have a nice shed with an engine sized bench.
On the bright side the engines are quite small.
