Porsche Macan Launch

Just retuned from Porsche Bolton after spending 3 hours waiting for them to unveil the new model.

Disappointed is an understatement.

They had three models on show, Macan S diesel (single turbo), Macan S diesel (twin turbo), and the Macan Turbo.
Unbelievably Porsche had all their base models on show, accompanied with stone chips and masses of swirl marks.
I just couldn't believe that they could charge between £42k - £65k for their new models yet couldn't be bothered to make them look presentable.

Anyway.......after looking at the three models on show i decided that most people will probably be putting their money into the new Audi Q5 RS.

The cabin was cramped and had too much going on, the build quality looked poor, the rear seats were no good for anyone over 6ft, too much stick on carbon. The list is endless.

Then a salesman told me something i'm just struggling to get my head around, the new Macan SUV is only 7 inches higher than a Cayman!!

After BMWs recent news of their upcoming launch of the X7 & X4, i'm starting to think that this SUV/4X4 market is starting to get ridiculous.

What's people thoughts, more Chelsea Tractors or less on our roads.

On a plus note, i did get to watch the promo video of the new Targa and that roof mechanism is truly amazing.

Here we go again.

The old 'I don't like a new car so let's slag it off' thread.

Must have been a week since the last one ended.....or is that started....I can't keep up.


Range Rover is for Toffs, Defender is for people who want to look country, Porsche is for middle aged men who are having a breakdown, Bentley is for the football crowd, M3 is for louts who have a boring family life, Aston Martin is for those who really, really want to be a smidge like James Bond.....etc. etc.

I think I am going to get an Oyster card and be done with it!!


I like the look and the thought of the Macan, but appreciate your thoughts so will try and get a look sooner rather than later so I can stop thinking about them, was thinking a petrol one might have been a nice all rounder, obviously not?

As for your summary, i currently run a Range Rover, a defender and an AMV8 and i'm no toff, country bumpkin or a James Bond wannabe. I just appreciate different cars.
Saying a Porsche is for the middle life crisis men is so cliche, i'm not a family man yet i've had a few M3s. I don't really get your point.

Anyway, bringing it back on track, the Macan is definitely overshadowed by the Evoque (however they are ageing very quickly now), the Q5 and the new X3.

I just feel like Porsche has rushed the design of the Macan.

On a different note though, the food was pretty darn good, and there was copious amounts of booze on offer. So for those of you going next week, make sure the misses drives

I was invited to the local dealerships launch of a brand new car once. Champagne etc.
Thought the car looked ok but not fabulous.
Didn't think much else at all..

I will be buying one soon.

My point was simply, doesn't matter what car it is, PH used to love anything new and pointless, now seems the exact opposite.

All the cars that I listed above I love, and grew up loving, as I am sure most did on here, but now seems more popular to slag them off than appreciate them.

It wasn't really aimed at this thread as such, not yet anyway, but give it a day or two and the same old faces will be on here saying what a pointless and ugly car it is, along with the SQ5, X4 or anything else that they don't want (or can't afford).

I don't slag off any car to "fit in" with the crowd, i gave my opinion on a car that i was looking at purchasing the misses.

It seems a bit weird that you'd say people will be slagging off the Macan in a few days though, and that they might not possibly be able to afford one. I don't get why affordability has anything to do with peoples opinions on whether or not they like the looks of a certain car.

Anyway back to the Macan.
It's a shame that it didn't look that much better for the price tag, especially after i've heard rave reviews over all three of their engines. Especially the 0-62 time of 4.6s for the turbo, that's just simply amazing for an SUV/4X4.

You may have a point. There's been a lot of frantic activity in this sector since the launch of the Evoque and its runaway success. It got a lot of competitors rattled.

Well, according to the Porsche website, the Cayman is 50.9" in height and the Macan is 63.94" so it's actually 13.04" taller than the Cayman, not 7"!

Maybe he meant the Panamera, but even that is 8.14" different.

I did give him a funny look when he said that.

I've never been one for the Cayman so i've never gave them much attention.
However after seeing the promo video for the new Cayman GTS, I'd say that it's a better looker than the 991.

I obviously didn't get across what I was trying to say very well.
It was not aimed at you, it was aimed at all those that jumped onto the X6 thread, and then those who jumped onto the X4 thread, and those same people back when the Evoque was launched. Any mention of an SUV brings out the same crowd who just love to slag them off for being 'pointless' and 'overpriced'.

I totally get that you are not one of them, but they will love the fact someone who wanted to like it now thinks it is a bit pointless.

Regarding the looks vs affordability, it is so true for many.
One of our mates always used to slag off 911's as 'Chavvy looking Beetles driven by those having a crisis.' Now his agency is doing rather well his 911 is 'one of those few cars that always manages to look modern yet yet classic at the same time.'
I don't get that sort of thinking either, but it does seem to be more and more common.


I was just saying, the SUV haters seem to shout the loudest, they will just love to see a thread where it is knocked back.

Very good looking car the new Cayman.
There was one of the M11 the other morning on German plates in a sort of pistachio green colour with graphite wheels and it looked stunning, the lines and the rear light cluster really did make it look quite pretty.

I can see your point of view though, i come across plenty of people who slag off my choice of cars.
I'm usually met with the normal remarks of "they don't handle as well as (insert said car)" or "if it was my money i'd have bought a........".
When i ask have they ever driven one, it's always the same reply "no but i've read reviews on it"

Everyone has an opinion and i appreciate that, normally i hold back on mine until i've driven or owned that particular car.
However with regards to the Macan, which promised so much, i just didn't like anything about it. Maybe except the engine which has had rave reviews.
As i said previously, it really did look like Porsche has rushed the design to keep up with their rivals.

I'm sure it'll be a great car, but for me i'd rather put my money into something that looks as well as it drives.
