Britain "Demands" a 20 Speed Limit

Now, initially, I thought the survey questionnaire used by Brake was "loaded" in some way with leading questions which could easily be interpreted to give Brake the answer they wanted. But no; scroll down the page on the following link for the full suite of questions:

Yet, questions four and six (and the corresponding answers) seem contradictory. 78% want 20 limits around schools / on residential streets / in town, village and city centres. Yet 53% want a blanket urban 20 limit. Surely, 20 limits around schools / on residential streets / in town, village and city centres constitutes a blanket urban limit?

IMO I can't see how this proposal works. Yes, a 20 limit around schools makes sense (although not outside of term times), but all the others don't. The other roads are either self-policing (by design, such as residential roads), or rendered useless (such as the Birmingham ring road being subjected to a 20 limit).

I must admit after reading that Brake page, two words sprung to mind : "Scope Creep"

On my road theres a school, that has had a bunch of speed bumps installed a few years ago with a 20 mph speed limit. Silly thing is that that during drop off/pick up time theres no chance of doing even 20mph due to the horrifying way parents abandon their cars roadside. Double parking becomes the norm, with even triple of and quadruple parking becoming more common (hence blocking the entire road).

Why stop at 10mph? I think all cars should be limited to 0mph. 100% reduction in car accidents overnight. Excellent. Never mind that the economy would be fked.

In fact, if drivers were made to reverse everywhere, would we see people coming back from the dead? We'd have un-accidents.

If my mode of transport happened to be a quiet Kia, Totota or similar, I could drive at 40 past a school and all the kids and parents would smile at me and never dream of complaining. At least that's the impression I get from seeing most of the school mums charge about far too bloody fast in their Aygo's.

On the other hand every time I pass my local school on my loud motorbike or in any of my loudish cars, even if I stop to let the peds cross, all I'm met with is faces full of scowl and evil looks.

People don't have a problem with the speed, what they have a problem with is anything they perceive as anti social. In my home town, at that particular moment, what's anti social is me, and all like me.

Neighbourhood watch assholes.

In Dublin we have an 18mph (30kph) limit throughout much of the city centre, due to a moronic Green Party power-sharing cock-up from a few years ago. It is incredibly difficult to continuously adhere to in a modern vehicle, and has more recently become largely ignored and no longer enforced. Still an utter joke though!

Joking aside, cyclists have overtaken me many times in our local 20mph areas
