First time posting here but I'm looking for some advice.

I left my car on a street overnight whilst away on business and somebody has attempted to break into my E60 M5. I had to wait around for the police to come with the CSU who found nothing - they wore gloves and there are no CCTV cameras on this road.

They were complete amateurs as they jimmied off the cover over the driver's door lock and then yanked the handle out. They failed to open the car, obviously and now I'm left with a vehicle where the remote access/comfort access still unlocks the vehicle on all four doors, the manual keys still fit in the locks and open the doors, the car will start but I cannot open the drivers door from outside or inside.

Currently waiting for BMW Emergency to recover it to a garage and to get a quote but I wondered whether anybody had advice on this. Is it worth trying to replace the door handle myself and/or taking it to a body shop to do this to save on the expensive BMW repair bill? I'd rather not claim on my insurance because I don't have protected NCB yet and I have a relatively high excess.

Very sorry to hear this...never had my car stolen but have had wheels etc stolen more than once. I can't really offer any advice per se but there's a decent chance that they will come back....do the police think they were disturbed or just gave up because they were rank amateur's ?

The police said that (i) they think that they're amateurs because they would know that they couldn't get into the car, and (ii) there have been a lot of thefts in the area lately.

But, the BMW recovery driver said he'd recovered 5 BMWs in the past few weeks as stolen/recovered.

That's crap. Mine has been "lightly" vandalised twice now when parked on a London street but no break-ins. My friend has his X5 stolen not that long ago using some sort of cloned key or something.

I can't provide you with the link on the thread in here - hopefully someone else will be able to - but please have a good read of it and forward it onto your friend. It may help you in the future...

:O - for what work exactly? You can buy a door from a breaker and retrofit the locks maybe from your exisiting door into that for a fraction of the price?

Invest in a dislok, i got mine for £20 from ebay that was used, a good visual deterant.

Would like to see a pic but it sounds like BMW don`t want to do the work.

Just go to a decent bodyshop.

You can ask but the car got taken on a flat-bed courtesy of BMW Emergency Service straight to the main dealer once the police/CSU had finished with it. The car is still with the dealer.

The policeman who attended the scene also said some strange things to me, which I don't know whether they're true or not:
- It would be illegal to drive the vehicle because the driver's door doesn't open. So even if you climbed over from the passenger side it would be technically illegal to drive although very difficult to tell from the outside that you can't open the door.
- That whilst the car starts ok the immobiliser may come on during a journey and leave me stranded.

To be honest if this is an insurance job then I'm ambivalent how much it costs, and would rather than it's done properly by a main dealer. But if there's any chance of getting it done without going through the insurance for hundreds rather than thousands of pounds then it is probably worth my while to save the excess, and more importantly the ever so precious NCB.

Also the car is still under warranty and so I'm keen for work to be done by a main dealer.
