Ok here goes with a lamers question:
Is it a straight swap between a rover gearbox and a T5 box, or am i looking at changing a whole load of other bits to make it work?

No and yes.

Someone else can tell you more than I, but I believe it entails changes to the bellhousing, driveshaft and gearbox mounts at least.

And the remote for the gear stick. LT77 boxes can take a lot of stick. The 520 runs one and we've been putting 400+ bhp through it...

Steve
Oh and the speedo sensor as well...

Alternatively (and with apologies for derailing the thread slightly), how easy is the swap from LT77 to R380?

My understanding is that the R380 is basically an updated version of the LT77, with some of the faults ironed out, so is it a more straightforward alternative to the T5 conversion?

R380 was intended to be an upgraded successor to the LT77, but it is generally regarded as being a sideways/backwards step tbh.

In what way is it a backward step & what are the main weaknesses?

www.rpiv8.com/transmission-3.htm#5spd

Even if it was just a sideways step, it might be worth comsidering if the conversion was simple enough, on account it being available new at relatively low cost...

Allegedly it is little/no stronger and has a poorer gear change.

not realy!! it is fairly straight forward but is the box better??? not in my opinion the gear change is better but thats about it, the lt77 will take 500 bhp providing you have mechanical sympathy for the box ie dont try and change gear to quick!! to change to t5 you will need a prop and a bellhousing and remote if you look in the clasifieds some one is selling one now it may come with these bits?

I read somewhere that the chassis rials needed modding to fit the T5 box. Am I right or was I reading about another car?

Mmm i have looked into this conversion myself their are no real gains, a load of hassel and money ask quinnie, the only advantage is a slik gearchange, and i think the ratios are better in the rover box, although a little stiff but great when you are used to it

Bluey wouldn't go into any gear ticking over the week before last when getting ready to go in for some work. Once I got it into first, all gearchnages once moving were fine. However. I never left it in neutral when engine turned off while at garage etc on the way.

After a week with the mech he reckons the gearbox is goosed, but is driveable.

So, it is a T5 box with 45k on it. Where do I go from here? Standard engine with no tweaks

Should I just replace with a recon T5 or is there a better option? What are the costs involved? EDIT: One in classifieds "fully reconditioned" for £500....( There goes Vera's trip to Chester methinks) I've read this thread but quite honestly I aint got a clue about these serial numbers or their manufacturers.

Cheers folks

Phew! Apparently, it was down to a bent linkage (?) and after it was straighened, and a couple of bolts loosened, it engages every time, without a problem. No need for a new gear box. Big relief or what
