As title really... I'm selling my 110 all tricked out and fat tyres and that.

Initially to swap for a nice, standard 90... But.. The 3 grand Rangie!

What's wrong with them?

Mrs Interloper has always liked 4x4s and decided she wanted a winter hack. So just in time for summer we now have thirteen hundred quids worth of an HSE 4.6, what could possibly go wrong?!!

Well what ever does go wrong I will have to figure out and fix......

3 grand Rangie? What's wrong with them? Nothing if you go in fully aware of what can go wrong and how to deal with it!

I still have a fancy for a P38 with the big BMW six diesel. Shame it only came in 2.5 form in them and not the more powerful 3.0!

The P38's are lovely cars, when they work.

I had a 95 4.6 with LPG, got it for a bag of sand 2 years ago.

The diesel is underpowered, early V8's usually have cracked blocks (I sealed mine up with ceramic sealant so may not be all that bad)

The biggest issue is the air suspension, that really was a ballache, but I'd have one again in a heartbeat smile

Hmm OK...

I currently have a 1984 defender running a 3.9 EFI from a Rangie. It's a second car so doesn't do many miles, BUT I've never taken a spanner to it - bar changing oil and that.

You should be sound.

My mate bought one (4 litre?) for £1500. Apart from the door cards and other bits of trim falling off in his hand every now and then and the car doing it's best impression of "slammed" a couple of times a month it was pretty good. The engine seemed to work more often than not and very often on all cylinders. Coolant hoses seemed to split for fun which made him swear at it (a lot) and the gearbox occasionally had a mind of its own (changing up and down for no reason at a steady 60 on the motorway).

He's quite handy with the spanners though so none of it really bothered him that much. Parts were easy to get hold of and not that expensive. He was glad of a couple of things though.

1. Not having to pay a garage to fix it.
2. Having another car to fall back on.

He paid £1500 for his so for £3000 yours should be twice as good and only have half as much go wrong (Advanced Man Maths Module 4.1).

Is there a £3K 17 year old car that isn't going to be a continuous spanner magnet?

What are my options?

I do a lot of shooting... Don't really like turning up in the monster truck :-/

I bought a 4.6 Vogue for about £3800 a few years back. Nice car and I put quite a lot of miles on it until deciding to buy an L322.

It did pretty well, the problems I recall were:

- leaky rear airbag, it used to sag when parked, easily swapped for not much money
- main radio/amp unit failed, that may possibly have been my fault but it was too expensive to replace so I stuck a standard HU in there. Didn't sound very good compared to the original H-K setup!
- just before selling it developed the common interference/battery discharge issue. Fine if you use it every day but it wouldn't "go to sleep" so the battery would discharge if you left it several days

Otherwise a nice place to be sat and a decent steer for what it is. I sold it after a year for very little loss; top of my head I think I got £3600 for it.

Russian Roulette...

Neighbour has just scrapped his P38 which has had less than 12 months after it slipped a cylinder liner.

Bad luck you say... but he swapped his 100 inch Defender hybrid for it, that he had just spent the best part of 3 grand tarting up.

Yes... he is an utter plonker... and I told him so

My mate bought a cherished and pampered 4 liter with low kms, knobblies and a winch.
He drove it and loved it until it recently blew a head gasket.
Costs to repair more than car is worth.
Now he doesn't love it so much (and is trying to palm it off to me, as he knows I'm a sucker for a RR).

If you can find one that has had the air suspension removed, in favour of ordinary springs, there's a lot less to go wrong. My old P38 chewed through several compressors, and the valve block that regulates the airbags for each wheel. If you can find a V8 with a good LPG conversion, go for it.

£3k would get you into a half decent D2. They also have their fair share of issues, but buy a basic one and a lot of issues can be avoided. I sold my Td5 GS7 Auto with 140k in Sept. 2012 for £2900, although it had already had £000's spent on it and was pretty good, it did require a little work.

If you can find a fairly basic V8 D2, you will do alright.
