I was just having a little look at van trader and pulled up a 1.3 Fiat Doblo. Whilst looking at the pictures I saw this



I had to do a double take, do the tax bands not apply to vans, £220 to tax a 1248cc diesel vehicle is a piss take, you could buy a 2L diesel estate car and pay less tax than that and have all the comforts of a car.

Is this because all tradesmen are obviously rolling in it and the government want a pice of it for piss all work.

Pretty much.

However, the people using a van for trade can at least count the cost as a business expense.

True but this would apply to a car as well. Also you can only claim capital expenditure on a car at 50% of total cost I think, a van is 100%. however even though you can claim business expenses back they still have to be paid for in the first place and when money is tight this can be a problem.

Yep.

And goes up roughly £10 a year, regardless of co2.

on the other hand if you happen to drive a discovery 2 commercial with a 2.5 oil burner its quite handy lol
