Which would you rather have,... a new Jaguar "F" type or...?
Discussion
A fully sorted rust free low mileage mint "E" type Jaguar convertible, either 4.2 Mk 2 or Mk3 V12...
(Assuming both were around £75k)
Bear in mind in 10 years time the "F" type might be worth £25/30k, but the "E" type probably will be worth the same, or even more, as they get rarer......

That does depend what you want it for really...
Well if you were using it daily, I guess it would have to be the "F" type, but if it was a Sunday toy (hate that expression), I think I would go for the "E" type.....You have to bear in mind with "E" types there's a lot of rusty dogs out there, I'm talking about a really nice one.
(Personally I like the V12's, but I realise they are not as sought after as the Mk 1's and 2's)

I wonder if in 50 years time an F type in immaculate, original condition will be worth what a similar E type is now?Personally I think it stands a good chance so it'll be one of those for me.

Without recourse to pessimism I don't think there will be many, if any, F-Types in 50 years time! At least not original running examples. Can a computer circuit board last for 50 or 60 years? If not we'll reach a situation where Jaguar will stop making spare parts and the electronic bits of the F-Type become irreplaceable. I know anything can be re-manufactured and that's maybe where the future of restoration lies - instead of welding we'll be soldering. Which is a nice thought. It will however, be expensive. Personally I think it stands a good chance so it'll be one of those for me.

And stuff like airbags? I just think the F-Type is in a realm beyond the capabilities of the average car restorer. You'd need engineering abilities far beyond the average mechanic to even consider it. As such there may be one or two originals owned by the hyper rich. All the others will have been crushed to death on economic grounds.
If an E-Type needs a new carburettor (for instance) it's not a huge expense. If an F-Type needed new fuel injectors in 30 years one may have to approach the fuel injection company and attempt to get a remanufacturing order placed. Or if the ECU burnt out then an electronics expert would have to be found. Potentially costing loads.
If you go to a scrap yard now, it's not full of eighties and nineties cars. They're either gone, limping on or cherished. The stuff in there, amongst the crashed and the written off, is early to mid 2000s. Not rusty like the older cars but failed in new and exciting ways. Things are broken, like flywheels (?!?) and fuel rails that just never used to break 20 years ago. I'd guess there are vintage cars out there with 100 year old original flywheels. Try finding a new-ish diesel car that could match that.
So in 50 years the few F-Types left will be super valuable. I'd still take the E-Type as it would be more likely to work!
