I'd like to go to Bedford Autodrome as it's pretty close but the noise limit has always put me off. However, I downloaded a Decibel app from iTunes today and set it up as per instructions (45deg at 50cm from endpipe) and it was only 95dB at 3/4 my max rpm. Seeing as their limit is set at 101dB static, do we think I have enough room for error (if any is needed)?
Cheers

I recently fitted a new exhaust, according to iPhone app it was no louder than the old one (back to back tests within 15mins of each other). Did a day at Blyton on tuesday and had a few warnings about sound - and advised to change the system for next time.

Unfortunately (fortunately?) there was no static test, so can't compare to my previous static of 98db at Cadwell.

A 3dB increase equates to about a 50% increase in noise, so given that your app has you at 6dB below the level for Bedford, that is a fairly significant margin. You don't say what car it is, but unless it's a turbo nutter car with an exhaust you can throw grapefruits into from 20 yards away, it sounds (no pun intended!) like you should be ok. If you go there (or most other circuits) when there is a trackday on before booking, they will happily noise test the car for you.

Call Bedford Autodrome on 01234 332400, explain that you'd like a noise test and they'll arrange an appointment for you to call in and have one done.

As for your numbers, my 97dB Westfield has always been OK, but they will explain to you that 95dB or over, there's a small chance of you failing the drive-by noise, even though you've passed the static.

Thanks fellas.
It's a historic Mini Cooper S 1275 with a full Maniflow system including expansion chamber and silencer.
If anyone was at Silverstone International trackday last Wednseday 26th March, you may remember it (grey with a black roof). When I was standing on the pit wall I was surprised how quiet it was, especially compared with some.
Unfortunately, it's a racecar so it's a bit of a hassle to load it on and off just for a 5 mile trip to Thurleigh for a noise test. However, from what you've said I'll probably book a day anyway and keep my fingers crossed.

Now booked in for the 14th so if any of you want to come and watch me be ejected from the track and have a good laugh, there's yer chance! smile

If you want to double check try an app called Decibel 10th. I found it pretty accurate.

If it helps, I tested mine with an Iphone App (Decibel Ultra) and the result was the same as the guys at Bedford result. I put the phone on some bricks at the required distance/angle, all very scientific.

Last time there I was 100.5 with cans bolted on, but had no issues with the drive bys. Look for them on the parade laps and don't be stupid past them....as if you would anyway?

I bought a sound meter from Maplin for £30.

Cheaper then the petrol to dive to the circuit.

Bedford told me just to drop in anytime they are running a track day and they would do a static noise test for me

Bedford made it 94dB compared with my app's 95, so all was/is well.

Good!! Hope you are having a great day. Lovely weather for it.

FWIW, I have known MSV's professional equipment be anything up to 6 decibels different from track to track and event to event. I don't think it is entirely their fault, it depends on atmospheric conditions, time of day, wind (so control it, perlease), other cars around you, the bloody wall next to the testing bay at Cadwell Park (I get my highest readings there) etc etc.

I am doing Bedford on 6th May. Keep your digits crossed for me - I was 101.2 dB WITH BOLT ON CANS last Thursday at Snetterton. Last time at Bedford I was 100.4 IIRC. Limit, as the OP said, is 101.

Thanks. Unfortunately I had a lousy day - I may well have passed the noise test but I failed the kids test. I misread the regs and bought the boys along whilst their mum went to work with the intention that they sat in the tow car with their iPads, but what it actually says is no kids under 16 on the entire site. My cock up but I was a bit pissed off when one of the guys running the day rather hung me out to dry at the safety briefing. Luckily a neighbour came to pick the boys up but then the fuel metering system went pop on the first lap. Anyway good luck in May - hope you have the same weather as today!

Bad luck - I took my dogs to my first one, luckily a nice man said "park well away from everyone else and don't let them out, and I won't have noticed them......"

Fuel metering system? confused there's posh. We just have a can and a funnel on a TVR......hehe

What I meant to say was fuel measuring system - I rigged up a lambda meter and LX1 display, so I can see how much (or how little!) fuel is getting to the engine on fast corners - the reason for my last engine failure. For reasons so far unknown, it broke

Never heard of that one before, must watch out for it. My tank is not baffled (only the driver is...) and the fuel pickup is bottom left. The tank is similar in shape to the one on back of a 1950s MG, ie a rectangular, 6 inch thick box, mounted vertically across the car, but in the boot, behind the seats. When I am down to 1/3 of a tank all the fuel shunts over to the right hand side on a fast left hander, and the engine goes "cough, please fill me up". Never thought that was doing damage.

My big worry is oil pressure loss, due to braking hard and turning sharply. The oil is shunted to one corner of the sump and the oil pickup picks up air, not oil. Some drivers with digital gauges have reported pressure loss issues like this, so I have fitted an enlarged, baffled sump which takes 9.5 litres of oil.
